Hi all, I have a 99 Eddie Bauer explorer that currently has the 4r70w awd transmission in it. I have removed the front drive shaft and differential and half shafts. I left the suspension all the same and just chopped the half shaft and installed the part that holds the hub together. I am pulling a 2wd m5od-r2 from my brothers totaled 01 2wd f150 4.2v6. I know I need the clutch pedal assembly from a v6 manual explorer. But that's about it. What else do I need. I'm converting to 2wd so I also have to figure a drive shaft out.

you may run into patts issues and your gem module will be looking for a trans signal which it wont get with the stick. other than that i dont know of any other issues that could come up besides having to replace the rear tires from burn-outs

get a sct tuner, or something like that. they can program both the pats out, as well as program the auto trans out if it.

I knew I had to go custum tuned and SCT is the tuner of choice for these trucks. How much does the whole custum tune go for? I'm also going to need a new drive shaft, as mine will surely be too short.

I'd like to thank vroomzoomboom for the link on that swap. As far as I saw i won't have any patts issues. Just. Need a tune for the trans functions. From the thread I've gathered I'll need.

A 164 tooth flywheel for a ford small block 302 with a 50oz. Balance.
A clutch kit for a 5.0 (also manuals a pretty new to me, so if some one could point me in the direction for that it would be appreciated.
A new clutch master and slave for piece of mind
A clutch pedal assembly and clutch lines from a explorer sport or a 98 earlier ranger a
I know I need to drill out some blot hole on the bell housing from 27/64 to 7/16
Input shaft length may be different, either 11" or 11" 3/8
There was mentioning of a block plate, not entirely sure if have to replace mine
For reverse lights there's a red connector on the trans that has to be wired up to something
Remove an alignment dowel from the trans that's also in the same place on the engine
What's the difference between the m5od-r1 vs r2 is terms of cases, I'm wondering If I can use a cross member from a explorer sport
There was also some mention of body to shift linkage clearance, he seemed to have beaten the body in some and cut something as well
And starting there is some way to get the computer to think it's always in neutral.

The drive line from a 96 2wd 5.0 x will work, I'll be getting rid of mine soon. My friend from ford said a 4.0 2wd drive shaft will work to.

I pulled the transmission this weekend along with the slave and master cylinder still attached. I'm on the fence about reusing the clutch slave and master. They both appear to be good with no leaks. 96ex5.0 how soon would you be getting rid of your drive shaft? And do you know if the spline matches the m5od? I kept the whole drive shaft from the donor f150 as well in case the length matched up or I needed the slip yoke.

Hey gcf1010,

I just did this swap on my own 1996 v8 Explorer and I want to help whoever wants to know all that I had to do to get it running. I'm at work right now and can't upload any pictures or explain anything yet but I will tonight~

Congratulations on your decision to make something which Ford never put into realization!

$300ExSport thanks for the reply. My name is Garret and I'm working on gaining all the know how and parts for this swap. I've done some reading up on this swap and got most of it down but I've seen nothing for a 2wd drive and that's where I get lost. And maybe some clarifying on some other points.

$300ExSport i just realized you live in Orlando. How far of a drive are ya from Melbourne?

Hey GCF,

According to google, you are about 70 miles away from me~

I've been able to upload some pictures to box.com and they may or may not embed correctly but I will give them a shot. Feel free to private message me, I will install the mobile app on my phone so that I can be in better communication. Also, just so that you know, I used the same driveshaft that came with my 1996 2wd v8 explorer. I had to grab a slip yoke from a manual 1999 ford ranger and swap it onto my driveshaft since the slip yoke that slides into the tailshaft of the 4r70w(automatic transmission) was too big.

Here are just a few pictures to tease you about your future install.
