Hi all,
I just thought I would share some info I found on installing an aftermarket stereo in a Sport Trac with the factory sub.
Now everyone knows about the pop that is caused by the 12v supply from an aftermarket stereo remote line, and installing a 1.5K resistor in series to drop the voltage to 5v. My issue was different.
I installed a Pioneer Appradio 3 SPH-DA-110 just after Christmas. I was running into a 1hz low clicking noise on the sub when ever it turned on. It was intermittent and sometimes would be louder then others. It was kind of random but it was there.
It turned out to be a ground loop issue caused by the amplifier connector included in the Metra XSVI-5521-NAV kit. Any Metra kit that has the connector 70-5522, including the 70-5521 kit as well as a few others will run into an issue. There is no ground line included in the connector. It has 2 positive wires and 2 speaker wires but no ground. This causes a ground loop issue between the amp and the deck not being at the same potential ground.
The fix is simple. Go to the other side of the small amp connector that the 70-5522 connects to and find the black wire. That is the cable shielding/ ground for the amp. Connect that wire to the ground from the deck (black wire on the main line connector. Make sure it is on the stereo side of the bus adapter. Vola, no more click.
This is probably a common fault in all ford systems that use this connector. F150, Explorer, focus, ect ect.
