Networking problems
I needed to replace my motherboard, processor and ram today on my firewall machine. I kept the same HD and periferals. Trouble is I can't get the network or the Internet to work.
The machine has 2 network cards one for the internal network and one for the external. I'm getting an error that says there may already be a machine with this name on the network, but there isn't. I tried renaming anyway and it still has the same error. Any ideas??? __________________ Rick Horwitz, AB7FH "Serious Exploration's" Admin Rick's '93/'98 Explorer "The Great Pumpkin" Dodge Dart 512 Resto/Race 10.29 @ 129 2004 Mustang Mach 1 2003 Dodge Ram/Cummins Dually |

Did you try punching it? kicking it? cursing at it? pissing on it? (have it unplugged of course!) Now, I can't say this will help the situation, for it may, or it may worsen the situation.. But, it'll help the fusteration... As a last resort, to take your mind on it, go to a junk yard, get a dana 60 and chuck it in the X! That'll get yer mind off it!

Rick,
Not sure what OS you are running as your firewall/server, but in most Win OS' you can go to START, RUN and type WINIPCFG or IPCFG and it will list the vital IP info for your card[s]. From there try clicking 'renew all' and see if it clears up. Additionally if your setup includes a DNS (Domain Name Server) It may have the correct name linked to a automatically asigned (new) IP address and just needs to be corrected. I realize this may be stuff you already know and it is unlikely these settings changed based on the new components , Unless the Mobo has a built in network card that is being troublesome? In any event Im generally more dangerous with this stuff than a bull in a china shop, but perhaps it will help get you on the right track. Good luck man, Doug

It sounds like the cards dont know that each other are on the same machine... are both cards connected to their seperate networks?... what OS are you running?

I'm running ME. I used winipcfg and it's really bizarre. It shows an IP and a subnet mask which I don't have ANYWHERE in my network preferences.

I'd try to take one of the network cards out and get them setup one at a time. They both probably have the same name. Which would be a default name of some sort.

Here's your problem rick. Is it a 169.???.???.??? number? If so that's one of the IP classes reserved by CERT (i think) to be used as private. Do you have internet connection sharing installed? If so, uninstall it and see what happens.

Rick,
If your connected to cable/DSL then the networksettings came from them via DHCP.. Since you are using a new MOBO and the same HD, remove the NIC's and reboot.. then readd/reconfigure them one at a time, external first then internal The 192.168.0.0 (unroutable) subnet was established for testing and home use by the INTERNIC or IEEE (can't remember) __________________ If it ain't broke, fix it till it is. 99 XLT 4x4 SOHC V6 2"TT/AAL 31" Kelly AT's aka Blue Mistress 96 Ranger ExCab 4x4 OHV V6 31" Goodyear RT/S's (not for long) KC Area Explorers |

Well, I decided to buy a 40gb HD and start over. There really wasn't much on that machine. As I said it's just a firewall for the most part. I also use it to "muti task" like doing the chat room at the same time I have something else going on the other 'puter.
Once I put a new OS on it, it worked just fine. Thanks for all the reccomendations. BTW, I do use an unroutable address for my internal network. Rick,
I think Campo nailed it. DHCP for those who dont know, will automatically asign an IP address for the machine the same way as most ISP do. I constantly have this issue at work where we test LAN devices that we manufacture. The problem being that the production folks always forget that the LAN segment they are on requires a manual entry of an IP address and consequently from time to time DHCP will steal an address from a machine that happens to be offline. For my test machine I have two NICs and set one for the business LAN to automatically use DHCP and I have to manually enter the IP address for the test LAN. Otherwise I get two connections to one segment or the other. In any event Campo's info is good stuff, Hope its going well. Doug:p |
