Ham Radio - CB - Trail Communications I have found that fourwheeling and ham radio go hand in hand. Post any questions or comments about the great hobby of amateur radio here. Of course CB'ers are welcome also. Ray, AE6H and Joe, N1LVN both moderate this forum.

Getting interested in ham radio again. Bought a new battery for my Yaesu HT, installed a mobile in the Ram... after 10 years! And I've been getting on the radio in the house. All VHF so far. Now I just need to get motivated to put something up for HF!

I bought a battery pack for my old HT (20-year old Kenwood, that's still like new and works great), and I just put AA batteries in it when I need to use it, which is typically once a year, at the hamfest, which was yesterday.

I lost my antenna when I had some trees taken down, and am working on getting it back up now. I picked up a hand switch to go along with my headset I got a few years ago, so I can get on the radio, without bugging the family too much.

I also picked up one of these at the hamfest:

It's a little pricey if you consider the materials that are in it, but considering I'd never get around to putting one together myself, I couldn't resist giving it a try. I will probably set it up on my tripod right outside my window.

I think I'm going with another Butternut vertical. I worked all states and 100 countries from my HOA, antenna restricted neighborhood with my "stealth" painted Butternut. I painted it flat black and put it up mainly at night.

No restrictions here, but I'm not in the mood to invest in a tower. Butternut's do a great job on a short mast.

I have a Butternut HF6V, sitting under my deck. Picked it up cheap, and it needs to be cleaned up and reassembled, and maybe needs a few new parts. I need to work on that one of these days.

We're lucky here in WA. We can get a "custom" plate with our ham callsign on it and we only have to pay for a new plate, not the "specialty plate" fees.

PLUS! The DOL will send a notice that your plate is expiring when your license is about to expire, so you can renew the license.

Yeah, I'd pay for the plate, but I refuse to pay every year for the honor of carrying that plate that I paid for. So, I refuse to get any sort of vanity plate. Ham or otherwise.

As I thought I had stated... I don't believe you actually pay vanity plate fees for it. Just the one-time "new plate" fee. At least, that's my understanding.

Yes, as bandit said, every state is different. Our charges around $25 for the plate, then $10 extra each year. But it's even different for every specialized plate.

KI6MCO checking in here from Los Angeles California (Chatsworth). I have a dual band Alinco (2M &70CM) mounted in my Bronco, a Yeasu VRX7 handheld, and a HR2510 for 10M. I also have CB's in all my off road vehicles and frequently carry a GMRS handheld radio when wheeling.

Happy trails,

Dan
