Why are my wheels shuddering on my 2000 mountaineer when I turn them. It's way more pronounced when standing still or nearly standing still.
It has had a wump wump wump noise in one of the wheels for a while but I don't know if that is related. I was going to do a post about that as well

Recent front end work done? If wheels were turned with the engine OFF, it's probably air in the steering system.
If so, drive SLOWLY while turning the wheels to steering lock repeatedly and the air will eventually purge out.

Yes the wheels were turned with the engine off! Because I just had a dead battery and pushed it out of my garage with engine off. I was about to add that this problem arose right after replacing the battery. I am going to try that right now. steering lock means turn the wheel all the way to one side and then the other?

Yes. Gently turn the wheel until it stops and turn the other way. Don't hold it locked, it's very hard on the system. Keep posted.

ok. that did the trick. thanks a lot!!!!

Great! That steering shudder feels like a very serious problem and it's amazing how often it happens. Now you know. ;)
