Dell 8200 Dimension

My parents are thinking of buying a dell 8200 dimension computer. It is $1279 and comes with all this stuff. 2.0 Pentium 4... anyways it says it comes with a 17" monitor but its not flat. is there anyway i can customize the special? Take a peek on dells site and try poking around at it. Thanks!

Be careful with the pentium 4's from dell... they dont use the the rdram (rambus) they use the PC133
P4's are suposed to run at 400mhz bus speed... they have been cutting corners to drop the price to entice people to buy. They made it so it could be used with the older 133mhz ram... just make sure you ask them if it uses RDRAM or pc133! You wouldnt be getting the full potential out of a P4 with that!
Bottom Line... Just beware!

This is interesting! I have a Dell with a P4 and I'm using 800mhz RAMBUS memory. When did they make this change?

Well, it's an 8100 from 2001. I knew that Intel had brought out a chipset for the P4 that would allow you to use PC133 and DDR memory, just wasn't aware that Dell was using that chipset. Is it all their P4s or just some of them?

I remember reading somewhere that Intel has basically given up on RAMBUS. They made a statement to the effect that they will "let the market decide" which is probably a death toll for RAMBUS!

The early P4's used rambus....
I forgot who maks rambus, but that company holds a patent for it, so no other company can make.. thats why the price is a little high.

To tell what u have do a search for a program called wcpuid
Many magazines use that program to do bench tests. It works well!

Update: Rambus holds the patent and samsung makes it...

They are the only ones you can get it from.

You are correct, Rambus is made by Samsung. When the new P4s came out, pretty much every PC manufacturer went to Rambus Ram because it is much faster than regular PC133. The problem was that Samsung couldn't meet demands so the price stayed high and the quantity stayed low. Many PC makers broke their deals with samsung and went to different types of Ram which is why Dell is back to PC 133. I have a 8200 I bought in August of 2001 and it has RDRAM.

I haven't noticed a big difference between the different types of Ram. I would rather spend $300 to put 512 MB to 1 Gig of SDRAM in my system then 256 MB of RDRAM...but that's just my opinion.

That is true, but you can always find a better price on the Internet. I bought 2 256MB RAMBUS chips on uBid for $77 each.

My buddy upstairs has a dell like we are talking about. he likes the spee ofthe rambus, but is frusturated at the cost of upgrading. he says you gotta do it in pairs and it is expensive. i can get DDR for mine dirt cheap compared to him. personally I think my PC2100 DDR is pretty darn fast.

I am the kinda person who builds their own custom systems....thatway it's easy to "tweak" everything (ie: overclock the processor...etc...) plus it's easier to upgrade i the future.

yeah i dont like how the big companies cut corners by using some cheap parts. I build my own. I also heard that some of the earlier P4s have a terrible memory leak and that is being sold by Dell.

Note: The above is purely hearsay and is in noway meant to be slanderous towards Intel or Dell
