Ok, I have had my 02 for about a year, Two problems the first one is some kind of phantom un-lock? When I get out of the truck and lock the door, the door un-locks as if the keys where still in the ignition, even though they are not. The second is more of a problem. The transmition The thing would shift late or very abruptly and bang, Ford tried to reprogram 3 times with no help, They finally installed a new tranny. Now I have the same problems as before and a new one. This problems great! Its very slow downshifting, around corners up hill and some times when you stop at a trafic light the truck does not downshift at all, when you step on the gas the truck is in 3rd gear and then drops down to first very hard becouse of the hi-rpms of tring to start up in 3rd gear. Now Ford is going to install another new transmition, god only knows what will happen now.
Can any one help me with this? I like the truck but am getting a bit ticked off.
Thank You
Lenny

Hmmmm, besides the computer and the tranny, the only other thing I can think of offhand to change would be the TPS, throttle position sensor.

As for the locks, dunno.

Maybe your GEM is bad and is affecting both?

Thanks,
Are you talkin about the main computor for the car?
The dealers never mentioned that.
Woulnt it be easer to change the computer than do 2 trannys?
Lenny

Well, you said they tried to reprogram it, I'd assume that was the PCM, or main computer. The GEM is another magical box that also controls many functions.

Two trannys? Screw that! You have a lemon...

Ask for a new Explorer.

I agree.

They will not do it, i did not buy the truck new. I bought it from a Ford dealer with 20k miles on it and it now has 28k.
ive been told I cant do the lemon law thing becouse it was not new and now there is two many miles on it.
Maybee this trany will do the trick we'll see.
Beleve me its not all that bad it only acts up once in a blue moon.

I'd have the GEM checked. It controls most everything electrical in the truck, as well as the auto 4x4. Since the transmission is electric as well, could very well effect that too.

2002 problems, part throttle

This is exactly what I noticed on my 2002 since new. It now has about 14k on it and still does it.

Late downshifts
Late 1-2 shifts at part throttle, sometimes it feels like it's in neutral
Late shift into gear from park.
I've even had it die once on me when coming to a stop.

The problem is it doesn't do it all the time. Dealer service rep, tech, and quality person test drove for a total of 31 miles and also tested in the service bay and they couldn't reproduce.

If anyone has any updates on this (noticing the dates are a few months back) I would appreciate any tips.

I'll take it back and I'll drive the truck to show them plus I'll ask them to check the GEM as noted here. I'll report back.

Great! This is what I have noticed on our 1 month old 2003 X. My wife called me from a trip she took to tell me that she was in traffic and moving very slow when she heard and felt a clunk (probably the trans shifting hard into gear). I have noticed how it "clunks" at times when going into any gear when you take it out of park and sometimes it takes a second or to to engage. Our X only has 1k miles on it and I already have a bad feeling....
I'm starting to feel better about buying the extended warrrenty (bumper-bumper 5 yrs/ 100K miles).

i have 2 words for you LEMON LAW!

Well,
never got my explorer fixed. But I did get ford to give me a extended power train warenty, Better than nothing I guess.

ford tranny sux

I have a 94 LTD that does not like to shift in cooler weather(below 40 degrees).

the first time i took it to the dealer they checked all vacuum lines etc, replaced a couple of minor things.

got it back home and still did the same thing. next step was a new tranny (which the warranty wouldnt cover 100% unless it was a rebuilt) screw that i payed the difference and had a new one put in.

STILL DOES THE SAME THING!!!!

of course u all know that it wont do it for the mechanics.
I left it at the dealer for two days during the winter and it worked just fine for them.
