FYI: a piping pete is a firework that screeches louder than anything.

Ok, so I had been hearing a slight moan from my car when turning right for about a month or two. Then yesterday I heard a few LOUD pops from the front right wheel, I knew something was wrong so I turned around and started for home. Then another POP and my brakes are gone, after pumping the brakes 5 or 6 times, they come back.

About 200 yards later after stopping at a stoplight, a horrible screech comes from my right front wheel, the screech continues until I get to about 20 then it stops.

I finally make it home, after getting tons of "what the hell is wrong with your car" looks , and jack the front right end up. Once up I find that my wheel can shake and is not tight on the car. So then I let it down, loosen the lugs, jack it back up and take off the wheel, and see that my bearings are basically shot and the rotor is almost impossible to spin. I pryed back the brake pads and it still didn't spin well.

My guess is that my bearings have gone bad, so I'm asking you all can you give me some directions on how to replace them and what I will exactly need. I tried search and couldn't find what I needed.

Thanks alot,
Tim

Replacing the bearings is a pretty simple job. You will need to remove the brake caliper, hub assembly, and spindle nut. Then you can remove the rotor and the bearings will come off with the rotor. You may need to replace the spindle as well depending on how much damage there is. If ther are any scorch marks or gouges on the spindle you will need to replace it. Just remove the 5 nuts that hold it on and whack it with a rubber mallet a couple of times to loosen it from the knuckle. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the help, could you elaborate more or can anyone please give me a step by step set of directions, or is it pretty common sense? I can get the bearings at autozone right? Also, I just need bearings and maybe a spindle, but what about a bearing race, some of the posts I read had bearing races, will I need to replace that and what is that, I have no idea what that is? I have manual hubs BTW.
Thanks alot for the quick response, want to get the job done tommorrow.

Get a haynes repair manual... that's what you need, and then you need to read it. All the answers are there to fix nearly everything on the truck. Not too expensive and worth the investment.

and the process is the same for just about all ford trucks... so if you have done 1, they are all pretty easy.....

I was reluctant to buy a new manual because i'm selling my car after I repair the bearing.

Get a Library card!

I have a card, but I never thought about looking there.

Thanks for the idea.
Tim
