I have a 92 XLT, and just happend to run across an F-150 with a 4.6 thats all banged up. Now I had a sudden brainstorm (I try not to think too much, sometimes it hurts) to put the 4.6 in my explorer. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience/advice with this subject. Could the 4.6 bolt up to my A4LD trans? Would I have to take the computer and all out of the 150? Am I just being hopefull? Should I just stick w/ the 4.0? Im just lookin for a little more power to climb the hills in Silver Lake!

The 4.6 is to wide to fit under the hood of a 1st or 2nd gen Explorer, the A4LD would self-destruct anyway, not that it would bolt up.

You'd be better off swapping in a 5.0, but thats also $$$ and time consuming. Do a search on here for 5.0 swaps in 1st gens....or if you really want a 4.6 look down at my sig and you can buy the stock 4.6 from me pretty soon and have a hell of a time trying to get it to work:D

a 5 liter (302) is a somewhat tight fit in an explorer. with that said, look at this comparison.

wow, that cleared things up. why would the 4.6 be so much bigger than the 5.0? i can see it has more cams and overhead but the block seems so much larger.

wow, I was wondering the same thing, how about a 4.9? I think the nose may need to be stretched for that one

If you notice on the Modular (4.6) the valve covers are the huge part of the engine. Imagine the heads being taken off and you will see that the block is just about the same size. The 4.6 in the F-150 is a 2V motor, so it won't be astronomically large like that 4V 4.6 in the picture. It MAY fit, but it probably wouldn't be worth it really unless you put some FI to it :D

The I-6 is an AWESOME work truck engine, because it makes its peak torque of 270 lbs/ft BELOW 2,000 RPMs, but it makes about 150 horsepower so it's a poor speed engine. In engines, displacement isn't always the most important factor when comparing external dimensions. The Chevy LS1 Gen III smallblock is 5.7 Liter, but is dimensionally SMALLER than the 4.6 Modular because the modular has those big bulk cams on top of it.

Majisto, the SOHC 4.6 isnt alot smaller than the DOHC. i cant remember exact width measurements, but the DOHC isnt really that much bigger. if i had a side-by-side shot of the SOHC, i would post it. :D

i still dream of having a 393 with a T-trim in my X, but thats not gonna happen either. :(

I'm going to swap in a Chevy 572 big block crate motor with 640 HP and 750ft/lbs torque, nat. asp. Like the one in project Copperhead!

so wait, are we saying that a 4.9 will fit? I'd swap on ein if I could, torquey engine, but your right, no speed. I just thought it was too damn long to squeeze under one of these hoods

If you want a V8, go check the RPS V8 forum. Since your frame is practically identical to the Ranger you can just follow along there. If you want ease, try to find a totaled 5.0 Explorer and get the tranny, engine, harness, everything you can out of it. Then with some mounts and headers you'll be set.

Yeah, there's one in my F-150, it IS torquey, but once it starts revving up on the freeway it's a hog. Too long, too much trouble to put in, and the results aren't worth it. It does share the tranny bell bolt pattern with the small blocks though.
