I took my new 98 sport (stock) for a spin at barnwell mountain. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me.
( However, I followed a few of the modified jeeps around, and we ended up at spider ravine, a 3 diamond trail. Since it had been raining, there was alot of wash down the main hill and it was sure rough, I'd say it had moved up into the 4 diamond range.
No lift, and only my MT stonewalls dragging me along, a jeeper remarked, "Your going down there in that explorer?" I smiled and said, "maybe, maybe not" He said, "Maybe not ever." Those were fighting words. So, I followed him along the trail. I kept honking at him, and telling him to get moving.
His bald 33s were spinning in the mud and coating my pretty green machine with it. We moved along to an area with a nice little obstacle climb. He got out, looked at his tires, and took the bypass. He had the neve to laugh again as I headed for the climb.
His laughter turned to coaxing and encouragment when he saw my stock X moving up the trail. He was amazed. (Frankly, so was I.) The X made it through, and I only had to back up once to ragain traction.
As we rode the trails, the X gained more and more respect, from me and from my companion drivers.
The final words from my new found friends and some of my friends from the jeep club:
"Wow, that thing is a beast!"
"I wonder where I can find an Explorer like that?"
"I didn't know those things were any good offroad!"
"All you need is a good lift on that thing, and you'll be unstopable"
"Wench? Who needs a wench?"
Needless to say, the X surprised, delited, and excited me. Lots of fun!
2 - 4 diamond trails, including the legendary
AIRSTRIP. You've gotta see this place to believe it. Bring the 4-wheelers and dirt bikes.
