Safe spot for Tranny Filter?

Got it installed yesterday and flushed the tranny fluid at the same time. Man, the 5+5 gallon flushing technique don't work! :( Oh, well.

Anyways, I was wondering if this spot is safe or do I have to fabricate something to cover it from getting splashed with water or road debri?

Water and debries should not be a problem.
Pray you don't get into a front end collision.
 






I mounted mine in the same spot, and fabed up a piece of sheet metal to cover it...I could just imagine a stone flying up from the tire at 70 MPH and putting a hole through the filter...and you wouldnt know until your tranny died...:(
 






The biggest problem I see with it being there is that when you change the filter, fluid goes everywhere..

I put mine next to the radiator, and put it verticle.. no mess when I change it..

Its funny, when you're in the middle of the project, you can't find jack doing a search. 2 days later everything shows up. :D

i was looking at putting it near the front tire.
But what if you get i tire blow out?
I 'm thinkingi it's going to take out the filter.
and i don't carry a spare fliter.
 






I don't have that spot empty on a '97 X. In a case of a blowout, I could just by pass it temporarily with the rubber tube. I always carry a quart of tranny oil, anyway (might not be enough, I know).
 






njsjfonline, what is that black wire in the middle of the 3/8" tube? Is that a ground wire? For what?
 












Here is a quick pic of my cover, I just made it out of a piece of sheetmetal, it attatches to the truck at the top, and then curves under the filter. The filter is mounted in the same spot as yours, except on the passenger side...

is for the temp gauge.

I put mine in a similar spot on the passenger side...

Can someone educate me on the biggest benfit and reason for installing an Aux tranny filter?

I like it because on the SOHC engine the cat lies underneath the tranny pan and you have to remove the front driveshaft to drop the pan. So now I can change the filter and a quart of fluid in about 5 minutes. Plus a tranny filter is nothing more than wire mesh where a aux filter is actually filtering out much smaller particles that would normally pass through. Lastly, it adds another quart of fluid to the system, which is always good.

where at?

I tucked mine along the inner frame above the sway bar and steering linkage.

I was also concerned about it getting picked off by some sort of road trash or something. I to had thought about a gaurd or some sort when i was toying with mounting locations

I decided it would be better off mounted to the frame so i tucked it up in there.

I also think that it would be better the keep that thing vertical if possible. I know the keeping from making a mess when changing it would be nice

I also have absolutely no scientific backing for beleiving the filter may work better vertical rather than laying on its side

It was a little tricky drilling the holes in the frame and then getting nuts and bolts tightened up for it, but i think it is a good spot. running the lines was a peice of cake from there too.

where did you guys run yours in the system? after aux cooler? straight out of tranny? in between radiator and cooler?

right now i have it set up as the last thing before it goes back into the tranny. It would be really easy to switch it to in between the radiator and the cooler if there is any reasoning for doing so. Maybe hotter fluid flows better thru the filter or something
 






Mine is mounted horizontally as well and I never spill a single drop of ATF; I simply put a zop loc bag over the filter and unscrew it.

In addition to what Gimp said for the reason, it also adds 1 additional quart of ATF to the system.

alirght so when you take it off no mess.

BUT how do you go about reinstalling it? Aren't you suppose to fill the filter when you put it on to minimize the air trapped in the fluid? It will work itself out eventually but i was under the impression that minimizing it from the get go was better than not.

you guys just fill the filter a little?

I could see if it had a little angle to it you could get some fluid in it. Maybe tilt the X a bit with ramps on one side or something?

maybe it really doesn't matter though.

I would agree with the others on the benefits of one of these.

If you are considering picking one up they are reasonably cheap and it can be installed in about an hour or so. Just think about what happens when you put one in awhile and you'll see why people are using them.

More filteration / more fluid / continously change some of the fluid (everytime you change the filter fresh fluid to replace what was in it)

the only down side i have thought of, is if i have to take it in and some mechanic decides he needs to drain the engine oil and spins the wrong filter off. I think in that case you may want to reconsider where you are taking your car though.

and possibly if you never change the filter it gets so gunked up that it stops the flow. But i would see this event as highly unlikely if you are installing it.
