1999 ford explorer
I recently bought a 1999 ford explorer that has been sitting for an unknown period of time. We put a new battery in it and some gas and it attempts to start but wont. It starts when we spray starter fluid in it but when we stop it shuts off. Anyone know the best thing to do? I suspect fuel pump but i dont know a whole lot about cars. thanks

Have a helper get in the truck, then pull the gas cap and have them turn the key to ON. See if you can hear the fuel pump running. Normally, it should run for a second or two, then cut off.
PS: Make sure to check the inertia switch as well. Simple things first.

I already tried the switch and that didnt work. i also tried a new relay and that didnt work. But when i turned the key to On i didnt hear anything coming from the gas tank. Thanks for the help.

So by the sound of it, maybe the fuel pump is not running. Do some searching here, and you should find plenty of info to continue your diagnosis. I'm sure someone who has dealt with this specific issue will chime in also.
