2002 xlt rear end whine / hum 40mph and up. Bought used.
Disappears when you let off the gas pedal and reappears soon as you touch the gas pedal.
I've been reading up on this but-
Is it the ring/pinion?
The bearings?
The oil in the rear?
All of these?
Figure I'd change the oil first, but what next?

time for a rebuild.

Your Ring and pinion have developed a groove.
Have the same problem in my Mustang. Aside from the noise it doesn't have any noticeable effect on the rear.

But dumped Magnaflows and an O/R X pipe drown out the whine just fine.

If you don't have the tow package would be a nice time to get the limited slip and 3.73s.

I do have the tow package.
Got any idea about price for the rebuild?
Not at Ford but at a good shop?
thanks.

I have the same thing with my 2002. I even had some noises, I think it was the ls clutches. I would reccomend royal purple full syn 75-140w with the ford ls additive (XL-3, I think). It stoped my noises and smoothed it out nicely. There is a drain and a fill plug the needs a 3/4" square drive. A lot easier than dealing with a diff cover gasket with all the bolts.

Thanks,
I'll change the oil this week and see what happens

Just a thought. It might be worth your time to check the rear wheel bearings also. I have seen a few of them cause rear end roises.
