2005 explorer starts with rough idle the dies

My Explorer just started this yesterday. While driving home it started to sputter then died. After three attempts to re-start it finally ran long enough to get home. This morning had the same issue. It would idle rough then die. After several attempts it would stay running but then would idle high and surge between 1000 rpm and 1500 rpm. Any suggestions?

No check engine light? I'd see if it has some pending codes or codes in general.

Alright, need to start there. No sense guessing until you get the codes. You can get code scanners for under $60 nowadays.
