4 wheel drive not engaging

i have a 2001 ford explorer sport it has the knob to change from 2 wheel drive to 4 hi and low. now when i switch it into 4 wheel drive it does not engage and does not light up on the dash. what can i do to fix this problem?

Check you electrical connectors to the Transfer case for corrosion. Also check you alternator is doing what it should. If you bring the revs up a bit then switch and it works, that may be the issue.

I had a similar experince. Found myself stuck on a beach and the transfer case went through the process of changing from high to low and it failed half way so i had no gears at all. A quick shutdown and restart sort of fixed it up but bringing the revs up engaged it fully and off i went.
