4 X 4 shift problems

Hi everybody, I've got a 2002 Eddie Bauer 4.6 liter 4 X 4. The shift on the fly buttons do not work, I think it is stuck in 4 X 4 auto, and the dash lights flash 4 X4 about 3 or 4 times in a row every10 to 15 minutes driving. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!
