4x2 to 4x4

I have 1998 explorer with the 5R55E 4x2 transmission. I heard that you can switch out the tail shafts of the 4x2 with one from a 4x4. Can you do that? Cause I would rather not have to buy a 4x4 trans if I can avoid it.

you will have to take the WHOLE tranny apart. the tail shaft is the last part out and the first in.

5R55E Rebuild diary. it will help you take it apart easier. (AND get it back together )

I say buy the 4x4 tranny, but if you have both time and patience it could be worth just the tailhouse swap. best of luck!

Can you? yes. Is it going to be a simple thing? No, for the reasons Lacky01 mentioned.
