If your SOHC 2nd Gen Explorer has lost reverse, you've lost your reverse band.
To fix it, you'll need to rebuild the transmission. It won't be cheap.. I guess around $1500+.
Common symptoms:
Shifted into reverse and heard a loud POP.
Shift into reverse and it's as if you shifted into Neutral.
I Nominate this as a Sticky...
