I just picked up this '05 XLT RWD Explorer to replace my Jetta TDi daily driver that got totaled. The Explorer will need some TLC, but I'm a former Ford tech, I'm up for it. The ring & pinion sings pretty good when warm between 45-55 (among other things). I've been wondering if anyone has put 3:31s in theirs. Mine's only got a class II hitch and I have an '06 F-250 Powerstroke for any 'heavy' towing I might need to do. Just curious if anyone has done that and what (if any) the fuel savings was, I'll pull it down first and make sure it isn't just a bearing, but it's tempting. Likely, the most I'll be hauling with the Explorer is groceries, guitars and amplifiers......

I have a 3:55 and think it's perfect, especially if you won't be doing heavy-duty towing. Fuel savings haha.
