- '99 Explorer Eddie Bauer
I have a '99 Eddie Bauer with the 4.0L SOHC/5R55E and a 3.73 limited slip "D4" axle. She's got 77,000 original miles, and been in my possession since 2015. Even had the pleasure of replacing the factory spark plugs, and pulling the intake manifold off for the first time to replace the leaking intake gaskets.
The thermostat is stuck open and given her age, I ended up getting the SimmonsAutosportz SA-3 thermostat housing with Motorcraft push-in style temperature sensor and switch, along with all-new bolts. Since the plastic radiator fan also has a minor crack at the base, I decided to hold off the thermostat replacement and buy all the parts needed to revamp the entire cooling system, minus the heater core and radiator - until a minor crack appeared on the passenger side plastic tank.
Now I have all-new OE parts, including bolts/clamps, and a Nissens 62060 radiator, since the OE unit is discontinued. The only thing missing is the radiator fan and clutch setup, which I've been doing quite a bit of research into.
The truck is an export vehicle, and as such, has a couple of extras. I was looking at this thread about an auxiliary condenser fan for instance, which can be see on the lower right of the Ford logo behind the grille:
I was doing a bit of research to see if it was possible/worthwhile to install a 5.0L V8 fan and clutch, but I wasn't able to find a definite answer. I decided to go with what's on there, and as I was browsing through the Mazda B4000 parts catalog to locate the fan blade to clutch bolts (Ford catalog didn't have them), I noticed something. The Mazda fan shroud (Ford 5L5Z-8C607-A/Motorcraft RF-214) has a built in fan; much like the old aero style Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis, which had an electric fan in front of the clutched fan:
The connector is exactly the same as the auxiliary fan that sits in front of the condenser. The Ranger/B4000 radiator appears to be the same as well; although they have different part numbers. Comparing radiator dimensions on Nissens' website, the measurements are on the money though, even though the part numbers are different. While it looks like it's a direct bolt on, with no clearance issues, I don't want to ship one half way across the world to find out it doesn't fit.
That said, I was wondering if anyone here happened to install one. A search came up with many different fans, but not this particular fan. If it does bolt on, all I'd have to do is make a harness that plugs into the factory connector and extends it to plug into this fan. That way, I keep everything original. Thanks!
