Ranger won't shift out of Park

My daughter recently bought a 2004 Ranger 4x4 V6 w/auto trans. She's been having trouble with the column shifter not wanting to move out of park. I have gotten it to move after several tries jingling the shifter. I've read that sometimes it can be related to the brake light fuse but her brake lights are still working. I've also read there is a brake pedal switch that might be the culprit.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to this forum! Check the shift interlock solenoid actuator under the steering column.

I was having trouble with my shifter lever on my '00 auto, and it turned out that the shifter linkage under the dash had come loose. There was an allen bolt that needed to be tightened, and that fixed the problem. The bolt is above the steering wheel column and is a bear to get to.
