Shocks with Air Ride Suspension Question

Yo Dogs...I gotsa querstion,

I be having dis 97 Eddie Bauer yo, and it be havin' dis air ride suspension stuff right? I be talkin to dis deala dis weekend and he be like "Yo, we don't be puttin' no new shocks on dem mo fo Eddie Bauer's dog!"

Okay enough of that...

Basically, he said that you don't need to put after-factory shocks on the Air Ride suspension stuff...the dealer doesn't replace them unless they absolutely need replacing. I am really unhappy with the ride quality of my EB though and have heard that Bilstein's really improve the ride quality, therefore I want to go to Bilsteins. Has anyone done this? Any ideas on whether I should ignore the dealer?

I believe you can turn off the air ride suspension (I think the switch is behind the rear panel where the jack is stored) and replace the shocks. Not positive though. BTW, the dealer oftentimes doesn't know jack.
