Does anyone know if it's easy to make a car fail a smog test by making the EGR valve fail it's test? I took my girlfriend's Toyota Paseo in for it's CA smog test and the place was a little shady if ya know what I mean. Anyway I saw him tinkering around with a pair of long nosed priers and he said the EGR failed. He said it was a solenoid or actuator or something else that only happens at highway RPM's. I'm thinking that he made a simple hose disconnect and blammo a quick $70 repair for the shop. Anybody have this kind of experience? It pisses me off 'cause I can't verify that there's actually anything wrong. If I take it to another shop for a second opinion it automatically costs another $30 to look. If it fails again I'm right where I started. Help.
