Sparks around plug wire

My 1996 Explorer Sport is sparking around the base of the plug wire where it attaches to the plug. Anyone have a clue what could cause this?

Bad plug wires/plug wire connections/ or spark plugs?

Replace spark plug wires and spark plugs.

Assuming it only occurs when the engine is running....

Could be a carbon track built up on the plug. You could try pulling the plug, examining it for cracks, cleaning the insulator area, and the inside of the wire boot, and putting some dielectric grease on. If it still does it then I'd replace the wire & plug.
