Got 2 leaks in my Tranny.....Leak in the Transmission Pan, which is no biggy, I can fix that easy, but I have another leak....In the Bellhousing. A friend told me that It could be the transmission pump seal that is leaking, and that it could lead to the problems I've been having such as delays in shifting due to loss of hydrolic pressure. And hard shifts and the morning sickness problem where the transmission will not shift from first until the transmission is hot enough..... does this sounds legit. Aamco told me they hooked it up to the computer and got no codes from the car at all. But they said it was a significant leak... Help please

Sounds like it's time to fix the trans leak. Since it will be out of the car might as well go overhaul it too.

You're not going to get a lot of codes

on a 93. Why would they even put one on! The front seal is a nasty problem. Just replacing the seal may not fix it. The shaft seal in not supposed to have pressure on it. There is a bushing that is supposed to keep pressure off it that wears. Many can't install this properly. There is an internal drain hole that some people enlarge to handle the leaking bushing. Suggest you look for some place that knows what they are doing and not the scanner dudes.

Other options?

Well the leaks will definately be fixed this week, I found out that there is too much ATF in there as it is. I'm going to do a full tranny flush to get rid of everything and start, anew. I wish I knew what consisted of a Transmission overhaul, and how to do so, if I could I definately would. Also, anyone have any pics of the Speed Govenor I want to make sure I'm looking into the right thing I would hate to have to do this again....(three times so far...) Whats the deal with this Morning sickness?! anyone figure out the actual fix to this??!

Fluid is too high so you're getting a trans flush for leaks? AAMCO diagnosed with a scanner? Sounds like "Oh Suzanna" lyrics.

Seriously though, be very careful going in with the information you've provided here. Sounds to me like you have a semi-significant service required in the front leak but a flush would be last on my list. Stabilize fluid levels, then troubleshoot the shift logic & other behaviors. Be wary. Many trans shops exist on customer ignorance. If the shop says "rebuild", run away quickly. AAMCO is famous for expensive and unneeded swaps. A flush sounds like the advice of a service writer gone amok. Their profit percentage on that one is stunning. Locate a non-chain specialist shop, preferably on recommendation from someone you trust.

Don't forget that a used replacement trans w/warranty would go for ~$800 plus your own install effort.

Not at all...?

I'm getting a transmission flush, because I just found out that there is still old fluid in the system, inside the torque converter, and thats not something I want inside the system. They hooked it up the computer to see if the ECM was reading any codes related to the transmission. From what I've been reading on the site, the speed govener might very well be the problem, I'm more then likely just going to replace it.

The transmission pan is leaking because we tried to seal it with "Right Stuff" which held up great for a while, and now it's just not. But the Pump Seal needs to be replaced because it's fried. I'm more then likely going to be doing all this work myself and I don't want to mess it up, so I'm essentially just asking for any kinda input you guys can offer. I can likely get a tranny from another X at the junk for about 150-300 bucks depending on availablity and since my company works with a few of the local yards. But I still am convinced that my transmission is fine just needs a bit of work. When it's warm it shifts fine. No metal or debris in the fluid, and no noises or rattles....

Consider spending the same funds on parts. You can flush it easily enough yourself after the work is done saving both fluid and money.

Flushing before imminent work only keeps your bench clean. Yes, the TC holds most of the fluid in the system, but it's the last step unless you're dealing with water contamination. Then it's a prayer.

Is there more to the problem than in this thread? Did it get flooded?

Re the morning sickness, it gets worse when the weather is cold? No sounds associated with the slow shifting besides higher engine RPM? If you shift to drive for 10+ seconds before pulling out does it behave the same? Just trying to determine if seals, sensors, pump, etc. You're probably on the right track with the governor.

Getting Ready for serious bizness

Just got a parts list together for my little problem. I love American cars.....not too bad on the funds when you can do the work yourself!

Transmission Service Kit - 12.99
Front Seal - $3.79
Vacuum Modulator - 19.99
Speed Govenor (Wieght Only) - 21.34

I spoke with 3 Ford dealerships today regarding my problem, and all 3 told me that generally the Speed Govenor doesn't have to be switched, just cleaned out as much as possible. He said that usually solves the problem. I'm getting no odd noises or anything from the Tranny at all, just the engine noise from the RPM's going up. And the colder it seems to be the worse the problem gets with any luck I'll solve it this week. Any advise is well welcomed

What is transmission service kit?

Don't put a metal screen filter back in this. A filter for a 97 V6 fits this if you buy locally and these are available from www.bulkpart.com for $10 ($23 locally) and modulator for $12. Complete seal kit is $29 and you will be able to do low/reverse servo. This is a big leaker and will cause excessive wear of this band and lower pressures. Speed governor steel valve can be easily polished with some fine wetndry with oil.

I had a simular problem with the shifting and shifting into drive when cold. I turns out that the o rings for the filer were letting in air and not "sucking" the cold fluid in as well as before. I replaced the filtr and o rings and it runs alot better.

Hot off the horn...

Just got off the phone with one of our Transmission vendors (Niantic River Transmission) and spoke to the specialist, whom told me that rebuilding the A4LD is a simple task. He told me to pick up a Chilton Manual for Ford Explorer A4LD transmissions and to read it over, and it will give me step by step instructions on how to do this myself. He told me that more then likely whats happening is the cold is taking it's toll on the valve body seals, he said it was a very simple thing to fix. And is well worth the time spent. What do you guys think???

Not that hard

Just don't unbolt the pump unless you have an alignment tool. I'd do the simple things I mentioned first. The ATSG manual at bulkpart is only $16. Just how bad is the front seal leaking now? I'm suspicious about having to go a full rebuild at this point. Have you read the rebuild thread?

Sorry, but I disagree with the guy who said a chiltons manual will tell you how to rebuild the tranny

Rebuilding is not the hard part. Making it work because you checked and rechecked clearances, made necessary modifications, etc to have a working reliable tranny is one of the harder things to do on any vehicle. I rebuilt mine once and now its back on the workbench because my low clutch assy bound up. Its not a simple task by any means, i'm a competent shadetree mechanic who is comfortable with every facet of rebuilding an engine or doing ANYTHING on a vehicle.

The chiltons manual will not cut it. Consider getting the two piece A4LD ATSG tranny rebuild booklets.
