Whats eh black box connecting to the rearview mirror?

I just noticed it tonight. There is a little black box at the base of the rearview mirror bracket that has a wire running to the mirror itself. My rearview mirror is not auto dimming or anything like that but something connects to this black box that runs against the glass up into the headliner. I searched this forum and found nothing an it isnt even mentioned in the owners manual.

And there's a black button on top of it to initiate the calibration procedure.

I have the same exact thing on my 05 XLT Xplorer it seems like it has an on/off button on the lower left corner??
