Description:

Our 57 Series Gen II Air Intake Kits (FIPK's) are built for many different vehicles and represent a dramatic improvement over a K&N O/E replacement filter alone; they use only non-metallic rotationally molded tubes that can reduce air temperature and decrease intake sound over a metal tube. Restriction can exist BETWEEN an air filter and the engine reducing the benefit of a K&N Air Filter. The weakest link in the airflow “chain” robs a vehicle of its natural horsepower. Often that weak point is the factory air path leading to the Engine. K&N Air Intake Kits virtually eliminate air path restriction by replacing the air filter and the entire air path to the engine. The aerodynamically engineered tube drives a massive amount of air into an engine, which translates into POWER.
K&N 57 Series kits are truly state-of-the-art. We start with the largest conical shaped high-flow air filter we can fit into the engine compartment while using factory holes and mounting points. This extra filter size provides even more airflow at lower restriction than a standard K&N O/E replacement filter that is limited to the size of the factory air box. The oversized air filter also captures and holds more dirt increasing the service life before a cleaning is required (up to 100,000 miles). When possible, the filter is isolated from high engine temperature by a heat shield designed to lower the temperature of the air entering the engine, which increases horsepower. Next we attach the filter to a rotationally molded tube made from interlaced High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). This process allows us to precisely shape the tube to reduce turbulence and accelerate airflow into the engine. This is why some of our tubes have unique shapes that are specifically engineered for each application. Finally the tube is connected to the engine with adapters made from high strength materials such as silicon and reinforced nylon and ensures long life. Put all this together and you have the best high-flow intake system available today.

First off I really recommend just a KKM unless you want the added aesthetic grace of the new inlet tube.
To review this product though, I must say I like the intake and have had no concerns whatsoever in the last 2 years.
Install was simple and straight forward taking maybe 15-20 minutes of my time. The product meets K&N's typical superior quality.
Further Pro's
-Allows for deeper water crossing
-Enhanced throttle response (just a bit, but I doubt it gained
me many ponies if at all)
-Sound!! I love that snarl under there when I have to get on
it to merge on the freeway.
Further Con's
- Getting the silicone connector over a BBK TB is a bit hard
the first couple times
-Always remember to clean your Mass Air sensor a week or
two after servicing the filter
- Structurally this system creates a pre-disposition for a
leak at the MAS. I have had no problems but I can
see it easily sucking a good amount of unfiltered air if not
installed properly with gaskets.
All in all I like it, but it cost too much for a few pieces of plastic and a filter!!

I love this thing, i have a 98 SOHC, it really made a difference on my truck. K&N says that i should have gained a little over 8 ponies, dont know if it is true. between 2500-3000 rpms the intake makes a great sound it is almost like a pipe organ. I just love the look, and since i have some underhood dressup it matches nicely
Now not everything is all good, the old saying is "speed cost money, how fast do you wanna go", and the intake cost about $230.

This is one killer intake. Along with this and a flowmaster exhaust, got about a 3 mpg improvement, and thats after lifting my truck 2 more inches and putting 33x12.5 tires on. The snarl at wide open throttle completely drowns out my exhaust and stereo and i love it! Only con is th price, but hey, this one is smog legal in 50 states! Take that KKM

This intake is amazing. Besides the cost, the installation was really easy, everything fit perfectly, and the sound is a complete difference. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a boost in their Explorer's performance. Just got it installed today, so not sure about the gas mileage yet, but I've heard it saves a lot of gas!
