If you need to carry anything on your roof beyond the basic small items you probably have run into the same problem I have. The OEM roof rack is made like something from a bubble gum machine. Also due to the taper on the stock rails and inside mounting on the bars you cannot even get a canoe on the roof. So I started shopping for cross bars and soon found out that most of the stronger aftermarket replacements like Yakima and Thule will run you about $150 or more just for the universal fit cross bars (Most are over $200). Well after many nights of shopping and investigating I finally found www.DiscountRamps.com. They really don't have a large selection of crossbars, however what they do have is the best price on these universal fit crossbars that will blow you away while saving a fortune. I was a bit Leary to order these since the price was so low ($39.95 + S&H) it had me second guessing the strength of them even though they are rated to hold 165lbs. I sat on the decision for about a week and then finally decided to order them since I have a network install coming up and will need to haul some ladders. I ordered the bars and received an email with order and tracking information. Then, they arrived at my door 4 working days later, good service so far! The box was long and thin and my first impression was "wow, these things are pretty heavy for cheap bars". So I tore into the box and was pleasantly surprised by the rigidity of these all steel bars. The finish is a black powder coat that has a rough crinkle feel to the finish for grip. The clamps are rather well designed and fit the Mountaineer crossbars extremely well (See images). The clamps slide on the bars for full adjust-ability, however once they are tightened down using the thumb screws the bar is locked in place. It took me about 5 minute with a tape measure to mount and even up the bars, they are very simple. Once locked down I grabbed the bar and was able to shake the entire truck with no movement of the clamp on the side rail. Let me tell you these babies are locked in place . An added bonus of these bars is that they have the exact same shape as the Thule cross bars so they can be used with all the Thule accessories as well, and that opens a whole world of options.
I would highly recommend these cross bars to anyone who is in the market for some stronger OEM replacements. www.DiscountRamps.com offered quick service and complete communication. To summarize I am extremely pleased with these bars
Edit: I also wanted to add that unlike the thule's I had on a previous explorer I don't get the wind noise that I had . I have a feeling that has more to do with the fact that these bars sit much farther back on the roof line so the wind is directed over them by the wind sheild.
