Pros: Cool looks, airbox is functional.
Cons: Spendy. Crappy instructions.

What is it with CAI manufacturers and crappy instructions? I had a MAC and it came with lousy instructions. Volant wasn't much better. I actually had to shorten my IAC hose and use the supplied elbow and short sections of rubber tubing to make it work. Took me a while to figure that one out. I understand a call to Volant would have helped. I've heard they have great customer service.

Once installed, the Volant has a much more finished look than the MAC it replaced and looks like it belongs under an OEM hood. The MAC's chrome and blue looks OK, but sort of out of place in an engine compartment devoid of chrome. The Volant's intake tube is hard plastic and very smooth inside. Little restriction from what I can tell.

Hardware and couplers are first rate and silicone from what I can gather. The setup is a tight fit, but it doesn't move around at all and doesn't need anything to hold it in place outside of the clamps (at throttle body and MAF). The filter is a high quality AFE unit and because it sits inside of the fliter box, it stays dry and stays cleaner, longer. Can't hurt! Volant claims cold air gets forced into the box thorugh holes strategically placed in the box. Not sure it it made a difference. Throttle response seemed better than MAC and I liked the sound better. Performance is comparable. I have spoken to users and tuners alike that claim Volant does better on the dyno, but never seen any proof of that.

I scored the model for the SOHC V6 through a member on this site. When I traded in the SOHC Sport on a V8 Eddie Bauer, I was very disappointed to learn that Volant didn't make a version for the V8. Next best thing. I took the filter and box from the SOHC version and got it to work with the OEM intake tube on the 5.0. I then scored a ASMI intake off of eBay (pretty basic intake system). I used the intake tube frorm that setup, replaced the Volant badge on the intake and replaced it with a "5.0" badge a la Mustang and have a truly custom intake for my Eddie. It's still Volant through and through.

Can you tell I like this mod? Quality item and works great.

Pros: Killer looks and awesome performance
Cons: not a perfect fit and somewhat pricey

I purchased the Volant system last summer (2005) when I saw it marked down 100 dollars from retail price at an online store.
I had been wanting one for my OHV explorer for awhile, but was loath to spend the $277 for it.

Installation was a pain, as there were NO, I repeat, NO instructions. But I was able to peicemeal it together with the diagram of parts they did include.

It didn't fit exactly flush in the engine bay, which concerned me at first. It took a little elbow grease to get it in there, and one stock hose does not fit their breather setup. Minor problems that even a mechanical novice like myself can handle. I checked with Volant and their customer service is a bit lacking, they said I had the right setup, but seemed less mechanically inclined than even me. There is a gap somewhere between their designers and service reps that need to be filled.

But once it was in and all was said and done, I couldn't have been happier. Awesome flow, awesome sound, awesome response. It is the highlight of any engine bay and is the first thing the eye goes to when the hood is open.
Now that I have it, I would have gladly paid twice what I did!

Do not let minor things like the price, or the possibility of a difficult install deter you from buying the Volant system for your explorer.
NOTHING GOOD EVER COMES EASY!!!!!!

Pros: Looks great, sounds great...
Cons: Tight fit, poor instructions...

Pros:

Overall I'm pleased with this product. Like stated before, it looks a lot better than any other intake out there. Resembles a stock setup which I like. I may have noticed a slight increase in performance but I'm not so sure. I'll be happy to see if my mileage increases. Thats more important to me. It does sound good for the most part when you get on it. the price was right at $235.

Cons:

I have a few minor issues. First off off is that even though it is a tight fit. The box still wiggles around a bit. I need to find a simple way to secure it. Secondly, it has a loud whine when I floor it which won't happen often, but is annoying none the less. Next, the lid is not air-tight which may be a reason for the whine it has developed. I need to find a way to seal it to see if that stops it. LAstly is the poor instruction. It did not mention you would have to modify the hard plastic hose. I ended up replacing it with a rubber hose and all is well.

Overall:

Yeah, more cons than pros, but I am satisfied with it. After I tinker with it a bit more I think I'll be happier. I would recommend it to others.
