Pros:

Tuning is good. SCT is pretty much the standard for Fords

Cons:

Hassle to re-burn, connectivity issues, doesn't work with all PCMs

I scored one of the so called "Apten" chips based on recommendations that were all over the Ford sites. Little did I know that Apten is just a tuning company and they use SCT chips as their storage and delivery method. To make matters worse, Apten as a company has gone down hill since their key guy left to SCT. Anyhow, I digress.
I got a 91 Performance and 87 Performance tune burned into my chip. Installation instructions were decent. Took a bit of effort to thread the selector cable into the cab (via the glovebox). I started having issues with my Ex stalling at speed on the freeway and usually when it was cold out. I was baffled. Through the good folks on this site and especially Doug at Bama, we identified that the real problem was connectivity. The chip can cause grief it it's not seated properly. SCT recommends you use tape to hold it in place, but it's not perfect. To make matters worse, when you put the PCM back into is slot, the chip can work loose. That seems to be what happened to me. With Doug's help, he showed me how to knock out a piece of plastic behind the PCM and that solved the problem.
I sent my chip to both Doug at Bama and Wayne at Hypnotic to fill the remaining banks with samples of their handwork. Therein lies a weakness in this setup. You need a re-burn and you have to send it back if you don't have a local tuner to do your work. I much prefer a flasher for getting your hands on new tunes. A weakness in the flasher is you have to be stopped to change tunes. You can change tunes on the fly with the rotating switch with the chip. You also can have 4 tunes in your Ex at once with a chip and only 3 tunes at a time can be housed in a flasher.
One weakness I read about in many areas is that not all PCMs will accept a chip. Some are jumpered so that an SCT chip won't work. To make matters worse, there is no rhyme or reason as to how Ford deactivated some PCMs and not others.
Tuning is where its at. Face it, the Explorer was geared to soccer moms out of the factory for the most part. Guys like Doug and Wayne can make your Ex run so much better than stock. Go with a flasher if you're going that route. Chips are more problematic.
