I became intrigued in tinted tails since I noticed that just about every "Altezza" offering for the 2nd generation Explorer is plain butt ugly. I'm now on my 3rd set of tinted tails. I did my first set and overdid it (too dark), second set (much better) and now on my third. I combined the first two with the "Testors Candle Apple Mod" (getting rid of the amber section of the tails with red). My third set I didn't get rid of the amber.
This stuff does work as advertised. One thing I cannot stress enough is to follow the instructions on the can to a "T". Use sparingly. Tail lights are not just a cosmetic addition to your ride, but obviously are meant for safety! I did three coats of Night Shades on my first set and they were too dark. You could hardly see my tails at a distance. 2nd set I used two coats and it was better, but still a bit dark for my tastes (see photo I added to this product section). It did look nice with the Wedgewood blue on my '00 Sport (since traded in), but not as good on my '99 Eddie Bauer, Amazon Green.
The 3rd time I planned to use one coat of Night Shades. I also did away with the Candle Apple mod. It doesn't look bad at all with the amber present. The tails are much safer with one coat. I didn't even mask off the reverse lights this time (I did with the earlier renditions). The tails are much more visible which is what I wanted. I was getting my tranny fluid changed recently and the guy doing it is a Ranger fan. He noticed the tinted tails and loved them.
The key to making the tails look great after application is to apply several coats of clear coat. This not only protects the paint, but gives is a deep luster as well.
I looked for this stuff for eons locally before buying from an eBay seller. Because it's paint, he had to ship to me via surface mail which took eons to Canada. I then found a shop that did have it locally and much cheaper to boot.
Good stuff. Don't overdo it!
