Home Improvement

Working on a project around the house, condo, or apartment? Questions about a home improvment project? This is the place!

Two years ago my wife and I bought a house that's in "move in" shape, but needed some upgrades. This year we're taking our state tax return and doing some updates to the house. So far here's what we've got bought on our budget. :D Frigidaire Microwave Five New glass block windows for the basement Attic vent Fan Bathroom Vent Fan So far we've spent just over $384 on these four items, however we're waiting on a $50 mail-in rebate from Lowes on the Microwave. :D We bought the microwave "as is" once a customer returned it stating it didn't work. Lowes sent it to a shop in town who ordered a part to fix the microwave, installed the new part, and tested before sending it back to Lowes. I was able to walk out of Lowes with the...
I'm building a 4x4x8 foot oven, and plan to use metal studs for several reasons. This will allow a cavity for insulation. I'm using 4" thick rockwool safing bats, cut to 48"x24" sheets. They compress to 3.5" nicely. I'll be constructing it on 24" centers-with a few pieces of angle iron placed in for a roll shelf and hanger support- My concern is this- the outer shell will be screwed to the studs- this leaves a small area aboout 1/8" thick where there is no insulation-rather a solid conductor from top to bottom in the center of each "wall" I think I'll end up with a very hot spot there- The rockwool will but up on each side of it, however it is this "solid" metal area which bothers me. All of the people with this design oven...
:rolleyes:Background: Well I have needed a new garage door for sometime. The door is a 1978-79 wood door. The bottom is rotting. The key is missing to lock it. Then I open the door it sags in the middle. Like I said it time. The hunt: The hunt for the best price/deal. I am good that this part. I have been looking here and there. Asking friend and family if they see or hear anything on sale or a installer with a spare unit. The hunt leads me to the Home Depot, and Lowes. HD had Zero stock and everything had to be ordered. So to Lowes had some in stock and because I live in Florida, In Sarasota County. (The next county south with hit BAD by hurricane Charlie 3 Years ago). Here I need a W6 or a (NS 4?) and I apparantley need...

If you haven't used this stuff before you should try it. This week I was installing some cove base at a Fed Ex. When you have a short side on an outside corner the cove base adhesive does.'t like to hold it while it sets. I have used staples or tape to hold it while it dries with so so success. I picked up a tube of this. Put some on the last few inches and stick it on. Hold for about 10 seconds and it is done. Great for the things you need some strength for right after installation.
Just curious if anyone knows of a quiet toilet flush valve? Our two toilets scream, whistle, and squeal like there's no tomorrow!! I've tried adjusting the levels and the flows through the valve, and I've tried choking down the flow at the shut-off valve (not really the best way, I know) and no combination of anything seems to make it quiet. In case it matters, they're plain old American Standard toilets with conventional float arm flush valves in them. We're not looking for absolute silence, but it would be nice if the system wasn't screaming and whistling at all hours of the night... Thanks!
How To: Install a porcelain hanging wall sink, faucet, and plumbing in a bathroom.
My bathroom is very small. It started out as a closet under a staircase. It was very difficult to find a sink which would fit in this confined area. A lot of these super small sinks are made for specialty faucets which could only be mounted in single hose sinks. The sinks, and faucets are also very costly, and not readily available. This sink is 15" wide, and 12" from its front to the back. Although I did see slightly smaller models, it wasn't worth the cost for the extra inch of space. This model is made by Crane Plumbing Products: You need the following parts to complete this task: 1. Sink. 2. Faucet & pop up assembly. 3. Teflon tape. 4. Plumber's putty. 5. Supply lines. 6. Sink hanging bracket. Some sinks such as this one...
I'm planning to install a set of attic access stairs in our attached garage. Currently we have an access panel there, but we plan to put some attic storage up there, and a ladder just ain't gonna hack it! I looked into it, and because the attic space over that garage isn't 'walled-off', the drywall between the garage and the attic/house is the firewall. That means that if I install an attic access staircase, it needs to be fire-rated (per the local building inspector). Unfortunately that means the attic stairs are going to be HELLA expensive!! The cheapest set of stairs I found was a steel set, and they were over a grand. So, I'm wondering: What if I built a five-sided box over the non-fire-rated access stairs, that was drywalled...
Crown Moulding
I found this article a while ago about cutting crown moulding. http://www.dewalt.com/us/articles/article.asp?Site=woodworking&ID=2 After reading it I decide I would give crown moulding a bit of a shot in my house. This is the second time I had tried to do crown moulding. The first time was disaster cause I had no idea what I was doing and no where to start. Once I read the article and made a few miss cuts I had it down decent. I only had to do 6 joints so I would say I am still very green in doing crown moulding. Im sure next time I will get better as I go. Hope this article helps someone try to do some crown on there own. Also Home Depot and Lowes are crazy expensive for there moulding. If you are getting a few feet but...
Ice maker
This massive POS ice maker of mine is about to get a bomb strapped to it! I've had to replace it once because it took a crap. This new one, which has been in for a quite a while but i've recently just turned the water on to it is leaking. Well not really leaking but over flowing. I had a service guy here and he showed me a screw to adjust to control water level but it's not working. You can see the screw in the side shot picture which i was told to adjust, but i can't seem to bottom it out or take it out, it just keeps turning. Some please help me before i throw this thing off a cliff!!!
We have a shared well for 8 homes and the booster pump just went out. 3k for parts and labor:eek: Gets better. The well repair guy told my neighbor, who is the well manager, that the shared 2500 gallon water tank has been infiltrated by tree roots. Plus there's a leaky supply line, and some other plumbing issues. Total estimate to fix the whole mess is between 5000.00 - 8000.00:eek: We have a repair fund for well repairs, but we only have about 1800 in there. So we all have to kick in the rest, or go without water. The good news... We have a pump and 1700 gallon tank on our property just for our house:thumbsup: We're good for a week or so.
