Home Improvement

Working on a project around the house, condo, or apartment? Questions about a home improvment project? This is the place!

Anyone have any experience with these? Mrs Shamaal doesn't want her tootsies getting cold and even though she has a new titanium knee doesn't want to bend over to push the light button. What I'm looking for are fake logs with a remote igniter for vented natural gas. Right now they're running about $700. The logs are ceramic for Pete's sake, I'll settle for concrete. These things cost more than an entire hot water heater. Is this another one of those industries waiting for some Chinese company to come in, undercut the price by 50% and dominate the market? Anyone with any experience with these things?
Over the years I have laid a bit of carpet here and there, and along the way acquired most all of the tools necessary to do that (knee kickers, knives, cutters, seaming iron, etc) but the one tool I did not own was a stretcher. Why? Because they are insanely expensive. SO.... whenever I needed one I rented it... usually not cheaply either I might add and inconvenient. Harbor freight sells a carpet stretcher ... $60 full price, and $40 when it is on sale. I have a coupon for 15% off and when it recently went on sale I bought one - $39.99 less 15% -= about $33. Overall it is not a bad little unit, but it only extends to about 6 feet.... I got to thinking and did some snooping around and found out that 1-1/4 inch electrical steel...
Got an issue.. I have a single pole 15 amp breaker that keeps tripping. It powers the master bathroom lights & fan plus one outlet next to the bathroom, basically 3switches for lights & 1 switch for a fan plus one outlet. The switches & outlet check out fine with no noticable damage on the wires that I can see or the devices. I've replaced the breaker with similar results. The wires leading to the breaker appear to be good. At this point I'm out of ideas. Hopefully we have some electricians on board that could help me diagnose it.
"New" House / Remodel Project
Today I signed the papers on my "new" house. 3 BR 2 BA, all brick with a single carport in the back. It has a few interesting things about it. It was custom built in 1968 for a couple who have lived there until recently. Its all electric, has a heat pump. All of the exterior walls are 2x6 inside of the brick exterior and the blown in insulation in the attic is very thick. I was told when the woman lived there before, her electric bill averaged $50 a month. This is how I looked when I walked in- It has a nice screened in back porch- The carpet was in good shape, but we wanted a larger room for the house. It had a formal living room, a little on the small side, so we decided to enlarge a door opening to...

I need to install a whole house swamp cooler setup. House is about 1800 sq ft. There are 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, and then a large family/living/dining room that is all fairly open to one another. There are 2 baths and a small laundry room that i could include but Im not sure if it is necesary. What size unit should I install and what size ducking should use. I know ducting depends on room size and distense. Is there a formula to figure out the sizes neccesary? Ive been serching the web and havnt found much on the design of the system.
Couch repair.
So I bought a new couch and while moving the old ones out, the wood and "brass" got scratched. What is the easiest/quickest way to make it look ok again? I have a lady coming to check them out tomorrow night. The wood shouldn't be that hard really, but the brass coated metal is what I'm not sure what to do with. Any suggestions?
Ok, so its possible there may of been an impromptu wrestling match in the hallway last night, and its possible a human head made a large hole in the drywall. (Possibly about 1.5 sq/ft) Assuming this was the case, how would one go about patching such a hole. Should I cut it back and square it off to the stud on one side, or both sides so it wont push back when I spackle, or just square it off and cut a piece to fit and jam it in there?
My home improvement dilemma----
Ok guys- I have just begun to feel good enough to take my house on again. Here she is from the street--As you can see it has potential- I have dine all the changes myself-built the bay window in the master bedroom add on, all of it. You can see where the original roof line was. It wasn't done the best way--but we only added 65 sq feet to the bottom footprint. The dilemma involves the building between the house, and garage-- The Smokehouse--- More to follow--
We just bought a three level house. The t-stat is on the main level it stays quite comfortable. The upstairs where the bed rooms are however stays pretty hot. Celing fans in every room help some what. We cant afford to crank it so cold to cool the upstairs. Plus it likely will make the main level an ice box. We just got a all new HAVC so any upgrades there would just be silly. Any tips ?
Has anyone tried these? I have a few in my home--one is a 22 watt outdoor lamp post which runs dusk to dawn switched by a photocell. I replaced this, along with several others on 3-14- 2002--and they still work!! Another is on my lamp table in my living room. It has run 24 hours a day! I have noticed though--for a multi light fixture-they are not as long lasting-for some reason if one goes-it will take another. Why is this? And why would a multi light fixture cause one to go in the first place? My 3 light ceiling fan, and a 3 light fixture in my master stairway both blew 2 of them, while a 2 light fixture, and all others are fine. Ideas? Since they last so long, and consume so little energy, I am sold. I wouldlike to use them in...
Ok, here's the situation. I winterized my gf's house last year, and like a dumbass I didnt unhook the swamp cooler water line(in my defense I always had central air). Anyway.. the line ended up splitting in the attic, and when I went to turn the cooler on it leaked. Ok, here is the dilema. The copper tube is 1/4" inch. Its the soft tube, and because it froze and ended up bursting the pipe itself seems to have expanded. I cut the split area out, and I bought some supplies to splice some new 1/4" tubing in.. but the old tubing is now larger/bulged. Is there anything I can do other than cutting a hole in the damn wall where the pipe didnt freeze, and is still 1/4" diameter?
How to re-stretch carpet
Prior to me becoming a computer technician, I was a certified flooring installer for 5 years and in the business for over 8. I obtained CFI certification I & II, which is basically a instructional certification in ways to properly install carpet, using certain type of tools, identifying defects & how to repair them, etc.. Basic tools needed can be rented from a home improvement store or bought. If you wish to buy them I'd suggest contacting L Fishman & Sons @ http://www.lfishman.com or 1-800-556-7899 or Allied Products @ http://www.alliedproducts.net/ or (800) BUY-GLUE or go to your local home improvement store. Here are the tools being used: knee kicker, stair tool/chisel and carpet knife (can use a regular utility knife in...
