sn0border88's SAS Thread

WARNING: This swap will be longer than bmxking's

Thanks to tig for a real steal that I couldnt pass up ($50), it all started with a d44 from a 73' Bronco. This means its drum braked, coil sprung with LP housing complete hub to hub with r/a's.

But, its matching width. :D

Its in great shape as far as EB axles are concerned. It has 3.50's which upon inspection are in PERFECT condition. Not one chip on any of the ring gear teeth. Also the rust isnt too bad, its simply surface rust, nothing damaging. Also most of the bolts so far are coming off very well, only breaking a few. Not bad for 31 years of rust.

So far in the plans are yukon 4.88's with full spool or lincon locker. Disk brake conversion VIA junkyard or broncograveyard, rear XJ 8" lift leafs and heimjointed crossover. To complete the swap ill be getting new cromo shafts front and rear with a new 5on5.5 bolt pattern for the 8.8 and 4.88's with a detriot. Also rounding it out are some new rubbers, either 35" boggers or MT/R's on 5on5.5 steelies/beadlocked pending on the DD status upon completion of the project. And, if it is no longer a DD when I finish, the top is coming off.

no idea, got the rims from a junkyard for $5 a piece and never bothered to measure anything. I dont even know how wide they are.

Truck worked great this weekend, no busted leafs, no driveshaft issues, it was dare I say perfect.

I did lose a cap on my short side shaft on the exit from the gauntlet (or so I assume) and it messed up the yoke pretty bad and did some damage to the lower ball joint threads but I think they will hold.

Some pics from the gauntlet and a look up from the bottom of it. So far, its one of the coolest spots at RC.

Truck looks super sick! I noticed the high steer:)

Hi-steer rawks, plain and simple. :D

Next on my list of things to do

French front spring anchors (I mean hangers) into the frame to lower the ride height a little.
Wrap bar
3-link rear
Shave/truss/disk brake the 9"
Dovetail and fuelcell
Cage
Doubler

And then I think I will be pretty happy with it.

And yes, Ive decided to keep the sploder for a while longer.

How are you doing the wrap bar? I assume you mean on the front cause you listed a 3 link rear.

I know I'm late but awesome job on Gauntlet that day

Micah neglects to mention that the devil trans acted up pretty bad though ;) We takin' a trip to Joe's in the near future, buddy??

Ill be bracing the old trans x member for the frame end mount and running a slider design rather than a short shackle. This gives better ground clearance and IMO better performance.

I have most of the pieces made already I just need to get it together.

Im just gonna see if I can modify the sump so it wont lose picup and run it until it explodes.

sliders

Using a slider design sounds awsome, you should post some pics when you get it in the mix, Im curious on how well it will work, never seen them on a 4x4 setup before.

These are my plans for the rear link so if anyone wants to critique them feel free to do so.

Dual triangulated 4 link w/~40" Lowers and ~37" uppers
2" .25 wall lowers with the ends sleeved inside and tapped to 1"x 14 tpi
1.5" .25 wall uppers tapped for 1"x 14tpi

Ballistic fab 2.63 joints at narrow ends. (Lower frame mount and upper axle mount) http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/263-Heavy-Duty-Ballistic-Joint_p_12-1226.html
There is a bunch of 1"" B7 all thread at work so im going to make my own studs for the joints.

Summit machine poly bushings at other ends http://copperheadfab.com/index.php?action=productview&productid=54

Axle mounts
Uppers http://copperheadfab.com/index.php?action=productview&productid=19
Lowers http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Lower-axle-link-brackets_p_24-1397.html

Frame Mounts
Uppers http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Inner-frame-mount-one-bracket_p_24-1174.html
Or should I use an adjustable mount like this - http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Adjustable-Inner-Frame-Bracket-_p_24-1462.html
Lowers http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/chassis-tabs-38-14-p-96.html + http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/frame-outriggers-45-p-251.html

Im using the outriggers so I can inboard them and get a bit more angulation from my lowers.

Coil mounts http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Coil-plate-mounts-with-retainers-both-sides_p_32-1179.html

Im planning on making my own upper buckets with a pipe to let the coils drop off the frame a bit and to act as a bumpstop. Im going to try some rear ZJ spring and front XJ springs and see which works best.

Ill post up my numbers from the link calc when I get some bugs ironed out.

Can't wait to see how it turns out...What are you doing for the gas tank?

After a few more junkyard trips I have netted a new 9" to start trussing, shaving, disk braking and otherwise pimping. Along with a 1354 manual case a 1g large case ford alternator for my weldernator project and something else....

What am I getting into now? Teaser pic, first one to guess correctly wins a cookie.

Stock ford d44 inner next to mystery shaft.

Manual case.

I'm not sure but you need a C5 :D

nope, bigger.

It has 47 splines. :D

Ahah yeah it is!

Sadly no, its actually just a shaft off a semi I grabbed from the junkyard to use as a t-case shifter. :(
