93 Explorer project "The Hulk"

Ok to give a starting point i want to say that i have had a 91 X that i had the Superlift 5.5" lift on back in 2001 took it to MOAB and had a blast including jumping it 5' yes FEET off the ground at the dunes. However it was unfinished and i was 19 and traded it in for another vehicle and have regreted it ever since. Then in August of 2010 i found this 93 that i purchased for $400 because it needed a clutch and was beat up a bit. So Since then all i have done was a clutch until recently. I started replacing a few things here and there including one front fender which the other needs to be replaced as well eventually. Then i finally decided it was time for the fun stuff. SO i purchased another superlift 5.5" Superrunner lift, the one with the extended radius arms. I also purchased a set of used tires and rims tires are 35 12.50 r15. Then i purchased a set of 4.56 ring and pinion with master rebuild kits for both axles. And i wanted to start logging all this on here for others to see as well as advice. So you know before i get beat up too bad on the TTB i thought about going to a straight axle and i might eventually but i personally kinda like the TTB and this is also still going to be my every day driver, I just want it to be more offroad capable as well. I plan to replace all seals and bearings in both axles MAINLY in front while its all apart, and probably painting/undercoating both axles at the same time. Any ideas on some small things that i may want to consider WHILE im doing the lift and gears to possibly save me some time or hassle down the road a bit????

Thanks for reading if you were able to read through it all just wanted to give a good background. OH YA and i will post some pics soon of the 93 as well as a couple of my first X the 91.

Yeah.... even if it wasn't pinched, that untwisted portion as well as the rust make me nervous.

So, thinking of replacing with more cable or some synthetic plus a winch cover?

The bumper is Awesome man! As for the winch... would a lubricant of some sort help? Something to make the cable a slick enough to un-knot?

Ok..........I spent the day working on the truck and got a few things done. I was finally able to find a trailer connector harness so i installed that. I also had to do something for mudflaps cause i got pulled over STUPID LAWS........ So here is a pic of the Redneck Setup for mudflaps. Please dont critcize too much cause i know its not real pretty and i dont care cause if it was my choice they wouldn't be there at all.

I was able to get the cable unbound from the winch by hooking it to another vehicle and pulling and it didn't take much i was actually quite surprised, and it looks alot better than it did and i feel confident it will be ok at least long enough for the moab trip. Here is a pic of it rolled back up on the winch.

And here are some pics of the bumper going on and on with and without winch.

Well I finished it up heres the rest of the pics......

Heres the pattern after shimming it up and I had about .009 backlash.

Yes stayed with the 4.56s for now I plan to get a new 8.8 with discs and cut down a d44 for the front and at that time ill go higher...probably go ahead and go with 5.13s so I wont change my mind again lol. And as for the shimming I got really lucky and was able to use the same ones from when I regeared.

Going to retube with thicker stuff or just shorten?

Yep, that should do. I have a buddy that's buying up HP D44 from 1/2 tons and retubing them sized for jeeps, selectable etc. figures there is a market, he's usually not wrong. He is buying 8.8 from explorers too for a package deal.

Going to buy or build a diff guard?

Undecided got to get the axles before I worry about guards lol havent thought about that yet.....whats your buddy charge?

I'd have to ask him again, we were playing pool and consuming many beverages when he was telling me about it. Thought he said around 1500 CDN. He is an RCV and Rough Country dealer among other things. He's retubing them with .5, Heep knuckles, electric selectable, build it as you want it.

Well considering what happened on the moab trip the sas will be waiting....hit a rock and bent the drivers side ttb.....evilreapertwin (mike) happened to have one with him that had a detroit easy locker in it and he hooked me up....so since now the front will be locked also im going to shoot for an atlas transfer swap later this year.....but for the time being heres some shots showing the damage...and some of the new parts thus far.

As you can see since this is supposed to be centered and straight......

If you notice in this pic the left side on the darker one is flush with the ground...the green one is the way its supposed to be.

Here is a top comparison of the two...ya id say its bent..

Thats it for now.....I plan to take some more pics of the damage if I can and some more of the new parts going back on.

Heres a couple more pics.

Hard to make out cause of the paint but you can see where the axle was rubbing on the beam for 2 days in 4x4.

This is a pic of the passenger side axle seal on the third member...

And this is the detroit easy locker that im putting in my axle. The orange looks like rust but it isnt just weird reflection. ...
