Heater Core Hose Replacement

97, Ford Explorer, V8

My heater core hose that attaches to the firewall just came off today. The male hose port that's missing the hose looks like its hard to get to, and I'm not sure where the other end goes.

How big of a job is this? Is it something that I can do myself or should I take it to a mechanic?

Havn't had to do my explorer yet, but on my old 'BroncoII it was only 2 hose clamps under the hood, pull the heater hoses off, back in the passenger compartment, 5 screws out and the heater core fell into the passenger side foot well. Might want something under it to catch any antifreeze that might still be in there. Arne.

The heater core is leaking. I wish I had better news for you but the repair is extensive. For a non DYI guy this one will usually end ownership, as the repair takes at least 6 hours of labor for someone with experience at this, first time allow a lot more.

I found it easier to remove the front seats and console, give a lot more room for removing the dash.

I wish it was that easy. Unfortunately the whole dash has to come out

So what is that tube the coolant is leaking from? A hose doesn't go there?

It's meant to be a condensation drain, and it's working well.

Thank you for all your help. I'm sending it to a specialist. $1200 out the door. Cheaper than buying a new car, and your help diagnosing the issue first made getting a quote over the phone much easier.
