I have a 2003 V6 4.0 explorer XLT with a good working motor but bad 5r55s transmission and I want to know if I can bolt up a 2003 V8 5r55s transmission into my 2003 V6 motor? I have the option to buy a 2003 explorer V8 4.6 with blown motor but good tranny for $200. I can't get a straight answer from my local Ford dealer or our transmission shop. They all say its possible but not 100% sure....

@NH2003
I have read not possible; bellhousing bolt pattern is different size and bolt locations. imp

  • 4.0L Cologne

  • 4.6/5.4 bellhousing

Not only would the location of the mounting holes be a problem, I believe the starters are on opposite sides.

That they are. A problem maybe solvable, if other things fit. imp

If both bell housings are removable, the internals and output shafts are the same, I think.

the question is whether your $200 transmission is cost effective anymore once you have to swap bell housings onto your dead trans.
