Offroad / All terrain wheels and tires

Ok, the Explorer ST is just too nice.. brought it home yesterday, wife with new baby is very happy to have the extra room and extra zoom... now I have to find some 20” tires that will fit and take the punishment.. 18” will simply not fit well... not on gravel.. too tight of clearances... looking closely at the BFG K02 275/55/20.. they are D rated, so 8ply... maybe they will survive the punishment...

given the 21” ST wheel uses a 275, I assume the 275 will fit..

Wow this is a great driving vehicle.. very impressed...

"with increased puncture resistance and traction"
Lol, sounds like a sales pitch which means nothing in terms of tires and makes it where you can't compare it to much of anything.
Sounds like a mattress sales shop!

If anyone is looking for a comparison between stock and some modest (not extreme) AT tires, the first 4 photos here are the OEM tires, and the next 4 are the Falken Wildpeak AT Trails.

Had a set of Rotiva AT LT275/55/20 10 ply installed today .. it is very very close at full
Lock turns... it is possible under full lock and deflection going over a large bump at slow speeds , I might rub a little, not sure yet, but it is the likely the quietest best on road, all terrain tire I could find in the size that will fit in 10 ply... with 4 season Montana rating... hopefully it will survive on my 70mph gravel roads... time will tell

both BFG and falken would be a lot louder on the pavement... with my BoF trucks.. love the BFG.. but on my wife’s last unibody Jeep gran Cherokee the BFG was too loud

I've been looking around for AT tires and it looks like the Falken Wildpeak is the only ones that fit the 18" OEM wheels. How do they ride & sound on the highway? I have an XLT w 18” wheels. I like the highway handling of the stock Hankooks, but they are not great on off-road trails, and they are downright deadly in snow. I want to really get out there and explore the Colorado backcountry, but this is also my daily driver so I’m concerned about highway comfort. How are they?

I've had these tires for several months now

I've had these tires for several months now and I haven't had any problems with ride comfort or noise. I honestly don't really notice much of a difference in noise over the OEM tires. I think part of it is due to the fact that they are not incredibly aggressive. Currently there are 21 reviews also on tire rack for these tires, and it appears that the reviewers also found ride comfort and noise to be good. I would definitely recommend them over the OEM tire that comes with the Explorer, especially if you are concerned about trails and punctures, or inclement weather.

Are those the All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires?

Peter

I agree the 275/55r20 work well. I have BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 on my XLT also. Tight fit, but no issues. I have mine mounted on Voxx Lago 20 x 9.5" +35mm offset. In retrospect, +30mm offset would give a little more clearance between the tire and the strut.

The BFG K02 look fantastic! I have a new 2020 ST with the track pack and am wondering if these will fit my spec with the different brakes? Does anyone know the answer to this? Everyone around me goes for the street look and I wanted to change it up and do the AT tires in 20" so looks like XLT have success with 275/55/20. @SES9 do you have any other angles? I'm trying to be as flush to the fender as possible or maybe extended out very slightly which looks like what you have from that pic. Any advice? Also curious what you think about ride comfort and ride noise compared to stock? I do a fair amount of highway driving and have no experience with AT tires and am hoping they aren't very loud. Thanks!

Few more pictures attached. They are not completely flush, but are much closer to flush than my stock setup. The front is closer to flush than the rear. As far as noise goes, they are definitely louder than stock but that would be personal preference of what is acceptable to you. I cannot comment on any changes to how it handles or ride comfort as they were installed with only 100 miles on the vehicle.

After researching many threads on here I think I know what I want to go with. Looking for very, very slight poke beyond fender and even look front/back. Looking for 20x9.5 et25 (or 20x9 et 20 or 20x10 et30) with 275/55/20 BFG K02 AT tires with 5mm spacers in rear. I have a 2020 Explorer ST with the street pack. Can anybody confirm that this sizing will work with no issues on brake clearance etc? Thanks for your time.

Since some 18" wheels can fit over the Street Pack rotors from an inner diameter standpoint, 20" should easily clear. It would depend on the specific wheel spoke design for that offset.

I'm going to get a Traxda 1.5" lift installed on my 2020 Explorer XLT and it has factory 20" Rims. Would 275/55/20 Tires fit work with the factory rims?

I wouldn't recommend it without wheel spacers. You will be even closer to the spring cup on the strut than my setup is

Do you think 18" rims 35 off set with 265/65 tires would work? I want to go up a tire size and get a bit of the off road look.
