I guess it is a motor vehicle so it can go here. Anyway it is a circa 2000 20hp opposed "boxer" v-twin i/c.
Ran great, about 700 hours with some oil smoke at startup. Pretty well maintained, and I believe oil was at the lower end of the hashmarks, some leaked after this incident.
Starter had issues, and I tried starting it with an impact driver(prob a bad idea, I'm thinking that hurt the bearings).
After changing the starter gear to a genuine Briggs (I bought a new starter and the off brand gear, changed twice, lasted maybe 20 starts).
it ran for about 2 min, then I heard a terrible noise.
It smoked too.
There is some oil leaking too, but I don't see any cracks (some of the engine is concealed).
Now it can only make 1/2 turn by hand. I guess it threw a rod?
Worth to tear down? I don't think there are parts for this motor anymore.
I asked a local shop, he said if you got that much use out of a big box store engine maintaining it you should work here. He said you certainly got your moneys worth. He said to buy a new motor or a new tractor.
He also said it can't hurt to pull apart and see what is damaged, but it wouldn't be cost effective if a shop did it.
I fixed the hydro trans a few years ago, it had a loose bolt.
