Explorer, Ranger, Mountaineer 4.0 - 4.6 - 5.0 Nitrous, Superchargers, Camshafts, Head Work, Stroker Kits... DRAG RACING. Explorers, Mountaineers and Rangers CAN move!

I have a bone stock powertrain in my 2002 ST. I am looking for something like a police tune or a tune that someone else may have done on their 4.0l sohc. I put larger tires on and would like to give it a little more power but don't want to sacrifice that much mileage. I know factory motors are not optimally tuned from factory but that's all I would like to do.
This is going to be a big stumbling block for a few people The stock balance for a 5.0 explorer engine is 50z in A stroker engine will require a 28 oz in balance-- so a flexplate and harmonic balancer switch is needed. The flexplates are out there, but the explorer Harmonic balancer-pulley-dis trigger is all one unique unit for explorers-- When I purchased my stroker kit from Coast High-they found me one I assure you. However, even with my receipt ( no part number) they have no idea what I am referring to-- My thoughts--can material be removed from the stock balancer ( by machine shop of course) to work with the new balance weight? Also-for thought--the 96-98 mustang pulley looks awful close--- I might add, my...
im far enough in this to not turn back, so ill start this thread now. starting with a truck that hasent been driven in 2 years before i got it. so its really dirty, ticks, needs some help. im going for a mild top end rebuild. just a nice cleaning and new parts, upgraded performance parts. with a nice coat of paint to finish it up. update: turned into full rebuild parts list: 2643 ANCHOR - drivers motor mount (rockauto) 2641 ANCHOR - passenger motor mount (rockauto) SP432 MOTORCRAFT - spark plugs (autozone) WR4062 MOTORCRAFT - plug wire set (rockauto) KS2358 FELPRO - full gasket set (autozone) PR422 DNJ/ROCK ENGINE - pistion ring set (rockauto) m328 MELLING - high flow oil pump (summitracing) 432217 VISTA-PRO - ready rad radiator...
So I am starting a project soon where I take a 2 door 2wd Ex drop a 5.0 in it and make if fun and fast... BUT what I want to do first is experiment with Nitrous first on the stock V6 engine, the Nitrous (Wet system) kit seems pretty straight forward... But is all I need to do is hook up the wet system and go, or do I need extra tuning? Will it work, or do I have make adjustments to make it work? I am not looking for optimal amount of HP, but I just want to hook it up and make sure it works, then swap the engine, and get more serous with it. If I don't have to I don't want to spend time tuning an engine that I am getting rid of, hence all the questions, so what do you guys know about this. Thanks for any input, I got to get going on...
Some of you might know this already, but it's probably the #1 DIY mod on other Ford truck boards, but it isn't talked about much here. Stock, the gas pedal cable has about 3/4-1 inch of play in it. This means that you have to push down further on the pedal to get response from the motor. By eliminating that slack, you'll get better throttle response. This can be done by folding the excess cable over and zip-tying it to itself, like the pic below. Very easy mod, and you can definately tell a difference. Lil tricky to get the zip ty on, but it's worth it.
OK guys has anyone ever heard of or seen a 2nd gen Lightning motor stuffed into a 2nd gen Ex or even 1st gen Ex? I'll give you a quick run down of the end goal. 1st gen frame swapped under my 2nd gen for ease of stock width SAS, but that leaves the 4.0 and well lets be serious...I don't want a failure prone motor that makes no power, if i'm gunna have a vulnerable power plant it had better at least make some power. I have a complete 2nd gen Lightning motor with a busted valve cover and a couple bent pullies I picked up from an assumed crack head for "CHEAP". I won't tell you how much because I don't want any hate mail but lets just say you could spend more on a good night of drinking. I just can't help but think that my 2nd gen SAS...
The purpose of this thread is to discuss the design and possible development and installation of a supercharger for my 2000 Sport SOHC V6 engine. I have no first hand experience with forced induction systems and want to learn from forum members that have them on their vehicles. While I don't plan to implement a turbocharger system, there are many problems common to all types of forced induction systems. The easiest and least expensive solution would be to modify a Ranger SOHC V6 Banshee kit and purchase a used Thunderbird supercoupe positive displacement blower. However, the kit makes no provisions for an aftercooler which I think is beneficial even with only 5 psi of boost. The Explorer Express supercharger kit includes a...
i am frustrated with Bob of TMH. i have been trying to get him to build me a set of his newest edition, the 1-1/2 to 1-5/8 stepped headers for my Mounty. we have talked on numerous occasions over the last 4 months and i still have no real date. communication is terrible. he has never called me back and 1 out of 10 times i try to call, he picks up. to his credit, he told me he wouldnt take a penny or promise shipment until he had a perfect set of headers. but i am putting my new engine in in 1 month and i need some friggin headers and the standard TM's won't flow enough. well, necessity is the mother of invention, so i decided to come up with my own design. i did this before on my 351w based mounty project and it turned out well, so...
Hi everyone I'm new to the forum and am going to start a turbo build soon for my truck. I'm wanting to do this for different reasons. First I have a 4.0 and yes I know someone is gonna say drop a v8...so in advance thanks but no thanks lol Don't want to deal with the swap. I have read jakees thread only on here that had good info but haven't found anything else. But am hoping this will be a go to thread with extensive info specifically for a third gen. This isn't going to happen overnight but do plan to have everything done hopefully in 6 months from the time I get to pick your guys brains and start a parts list besides the turbo kit. I would like to know what other components. Injector size??fuel pump, boost a pump?? Spark plugs...
My 98 4.0 SOHC is really fast. Are they supposed to be fast? I have whipped up on a lot of cars and trucks trying to race me. Seems like the thing has endless gears compaired to my 4.0 95 EB and my 01 Expedition 5.4. I hit the gas and it starts going into passing gear, but if I hit it again it goes into a higher passing gear and just kicks azz is this normal or did someone put a tune on this thing? I know it is all set up for towing and the towing rack in the back is huge and meant for hauling something big and the it even had what looks like after market oil and trans coolers. Anyone have any ideas? I got this truck used.
I went drag racing for the first time in my '94 Explorer sport 5-speed manual earlier this fall. My car was completely stock at the time. Didn't win any races but was still a ton of fun. Looking forward to when the track re-opens in the spring. Towards the end of the video I put in a few clips of other cars that raced that night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F99JyiekOvs&list=UUcFmTDrQstJ4Jn2TvAmBmpg
Ok, I've been planning on swapping in a 302 into my truck soon after the axle swap is done. I've seen how expensive it is for the Advance Adapters parts to use with my truck, and wanted to find a way around spending 500+ dollars on adapters, so I figured I'd see if a 302 could be used (with the trans and t-case) from a ~92 F150. I know that there could possibly be a problem with clearance, but other than that, it seems like it would work as good or better than any other 302 setup. I believe that AudioDude (or something like that) was doing a similar swap in his Explorer with an F150 setup, but he never really finished saying how the swap was going. :( After seeing my friends '92 F150, and seeing how nice of a setup he had (302, ZF5...
Congrats to Brad the new owner of my former TTSaleen project! Brad made it to Dragging Rights today and made his first ever dragstrip pass in the car. 1st pass - Left easy, lifted before 1,000 feet. On the brakes ran a 10.70 @ 107. 2nd pass - Left easy, tires started hazing top of 2nd and 3rd gears. Banged out a 9.93 @ 148 mph on the exact same tuneup I ran at Darlington, SC 2 years ago! Pump gas only (93 octane) and 17 pounds max boost. Big SHOUT-OUT to Fastlane Motorsports for building such a bad ass combination that literally ANYONE can hop in and drive but still have the power to run like this one does! Awesome job guys! I'm starting to investigate the availability of performance heads for my 4.0L SOHC V6. Morana Racing with a $300 core charge (for a pair) offers three options: Stage 1 for $700 includes rebuild, 3 angle valve job, match ported & lightly polished around the intake/exhaust ports. Stage 2 for $980 appears to include Stage 1 plus porting & bowl work Stage 3 for $2300 appears to include Stage 1 & 2 plus best street porting, larger intake & exhaust valves, heavy duty springs I didn't find any performance results for the above on their website and I haven't found any posts on the internet for Mustangs, Rangers or Explorers using their heads. Super Six Motorsports (SSM) with a $300 core charge (for a pair) offers two...
