So you want to do a V8 swap in your Explorer, Ranger, or Bronco II? Well here is a compilation of V8 swap threads- old general tech thread by Gofast 5 liter and 4R70W into a 1st gen. by seth2472006 5 liter and 4R70W into an 03 Ranger by rwenzing 5 liter and T5 into a 1st gen. by Chief34 4 liter M5OD to A4LD to 5 liter 4R70W by 410 Fortune 5.0L/4R70W 2WD into a 1st Gen (WITH a 2nd Gen Dash Swap) Spdrce
This idea has been in my head now for a good bit, plans of pulling this torsion bar b/s out of my 98 ranger and going solid. Running this year in mud bogs we are using a 96 ranger with ttb style suspension but is outfitted with a 2.3 4cyl and 5.13 gears with absolutely no power. So this end of summer/winter project is to go solid in my current daily driver since it has a v6 and it would just be bad*ss Has anyone here done this body style and can give me any ideas/pointers? I have a dana 44 out of early bronco and plan to find a 9" rear for the back
Well, this project has phases. How many? I don't know... First, we bought the little truck for my son and this is how it came. 1990 Regular cab regular bed 2.3 5speed 4x4. 4.10 gears, D35 and rear 7.5. Only thing fancy about this truck was the pushbutton shift for the tcase. Already had a Skyjacker 6" lift, 31s on 15x10 wheels (?) and the fiberglass flares. The boy drove it all over for a year and half and then we moved from California to Utah. When I bought it I knew it had some rust in the cab, but it wasn't until later in Utah we discovered how bad it was. We deemed the truck unsafe and took it off the streets. Literally, the A pillars were rusted through, firewall seams were rusted through and the door jambs where...
Ok decided I would like to run 37's. I know knowi just locked the front and etc, etc. but over the next year i will have about 3 months(non consecutive) of time to wheel. the rest will be spent in schools training to to be an uber elite solider wearing a green beret. So I was like heck might as well do a SAS and do it right since I will gonna be saving all that money. I've been thinking about axles.. tons of choices are brought up by research. My questions are there : Should I buy a currie built axle or get a junk yard one and rebuilt it (remember time is not an option for me at this point but i did find one at a junk yard for 350 or so)? How do i measure for coil-overs? (something i noticed no one covered in their threads)...
Okay, I just bought my front axle and figured I could start this thread up. She needs some cleaning: 1977 High Pinion 44 without the cast wedges. 5x5.5 lug pattern Already set up for disc brakes! :D Carrier is very clean 3.50 gears, for now Complete steering This will get 4.56 gears and run 35" tires, most likely Duratracs. I won't get to start on this project right away but had to jump on this when I saw it. It's exactly what I've been looking for. I'll start the tear down and clean up soon, gonna run it through the quarter wash first. Pics will follow, as always. Input and advice is greatly appreciated. This is the biggest project I've ever done but I have plenty of resources at my disposal: friends, shop...

First off... '78 Ford F-250 HPD44 5.13 gears spooled Yukon 4340 inners and outers Alloy USA u-joints and full circle clips Highsteer using 1.5" OD DOM Warn Premium hubs Fornt axle is already built, i just have to move the front perches in a few inches and re-paint it Rear will be a GM 14bFF 5.13 gears welded spiders RuffStuff disc conversion late '70's disc brakes and rotors I will start building the rear in a few weeks D44 vs. D60 as everyone has seen before HP D44, just got to clean it up and move the perches in a few inches and it will be ready for boltup...next to TJ's D60. Here it is finishing up, just got to install the drivers side 4340's and finish installing hubs
I've finally been able to start to gathering up parts for a 44. I'm going to be using a HPD44 running it full width, with ford outers. Just a warning, this might take some time. In the mean time, i took off the 3" BL, i cut up the front bumper, cut my front fender openings Jefe style, cut off the pieces behind the rear wheels, made the rear frenderwells a little bit larger, and completely removed the rear bumper to start fabbing one up. In the end i still only plan on running a 36-37" tire. I will still be leafs. I will update this thread as i make more progress. So to start, no more body lift!!!!!!
Ok i figured i would go ahead and post this in the projects because i am already starting to gather up my parts. I will be going with a HP D30 out of a '94 YJ, i will try to go ahead an list everything i am going with here '94 HP D30(YJ) (in garage) TJ alloy axle shafts (1 piece) (decided to hold off on these) 4.56 gears, powertrax '79 Waggy springs and shackles, SOA '94 Explorer Steering pump AND box 22" Stainless brake lines (RE1550) (on order) SOA in the rear with blocks PLease post any questions here if you have any
EDIT 6/30/05: I have successfully installed a BW4406 from a Ford Expedition. Pictures of the install begin on page 8 of the thread. Pages 1 - 7 are research for the swap. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK. I want to really nail this down. I would like to get 4low in my V8 Mountaineer, with 6bolt, 31spline 4R70W. I DON'T NEED AN ATLAS!! Since this is the same transmission pattern that is used in the fullsized trucks such as the Bronco and F150 a t-case should be able to be found that mates up. What t-cases were used? The real problem will be fitting? I know the older F150s and Broncos used...
ok yall. i used the search and i couldnt answer my question. my friend is selling a 5.0 302 straight out of a 87 stang GT for $100 it has balls and all. but i was wondering would the stock tranny bolt up to this moto or if it soesnt could i get a bronco and take the tranny and the transfer case. would my stock transfer case bolt up to the bigger tranny. i doubt it. i guess the main question i have is would a bronco's tranny bolt up to a 302 5.0. i want to keep it 4x4. if there is no way this could work, then ill just performance the crap outta my 4.0 ad force itto be a 332 (that number sounds cooll enough) jason
Well so far im about 2000$ into the swap but things are going very well. Ive just finished putting my fornt axle together minus the locker. Im going to hold out and find a used ARB or wait until i can get the same Electric locker front and rear. Here are some pic's of the axle. Not all the $$ is into the axle some of is in the hydro assist steering and the onboard air system going on. I know its not the biggest axle but it will do what i want it to. After the Chromoly Axle shafts it should be done. This way i keep my abs up front, HP, same bolt patern as rear just what i wanted. Still waiting on some other fab parts but ill keep you guys updated. High Pinion Dana 30 from a 93 Jeep XJ with 4.88 gears new 760x u joints, ABS...
