Solid Axle Swap Registry

If you have completed a solid axle swap on your Explorer and would like to share the results with others this is the place to do it:D This isn't the place to talk about a work in progress, rather a place for the FINAL results, specs, instructions etc
KEEP IN MIND, EVERYTHING THAT FOLLOWS IS FROM MY BUILD ON ANOTHER SITE, SO ITS PRESENT TENSE WHEN I DID IT....BUT, IT SHOWS FULL BUILT MORE OR LESS. so, i decided to obliterate my truck in an attempt at making something better. so far so good, im happy to say. this is blackfoot(what i named my truck (no its not corny). so ive seen people chop the rear end off their rigs to make a pick-up style rear end. i really liked the idea, and decided to go forward with it on my own. i have no fabrication experience at all, im majoring in welding in an attempt to learn fabrication, but i guess i would learn best by doing it. so, after much contemplation, i decided to do this to my explorer. i had somewhat of a different idea though...
I don't post here much anymore but since I got my start here I thought i'd post up. Got my explorer out of the garage finally. Still need to build a radius arm x-member, mount my winch, resolve a brake leak, and run rock lights/in cab winch controls. I currently have stock junk for the steering. I'll be replacing that with heims and DOM. Also need to make an e-brake provision. Either going to use electric line locks or build a driveline brake which will mount to the output of the x-fer case. Driveline: 1978 9" 1979 D44 Custom 9" disk brake conversion w/ Oldsmobile Bravada calipers 5.13 gears spooled rear open front (planning on ARB) 3.5" eb springs stock rear springs 35" BFG MT's Misc: CB hand throttle rock sliders which replace the...

I have a 98 explorer xlt that I bought when I was 15. Shes still running but last year I decided to straight axle it on a budget. Had a dana 44 but couldn't find any parts for it in any local junkyards. So I scrapped it and picked up a dana 30 cheap that is holding up surprisingly well. Front axle- High pinion Dana 30, 4.10 gears, xj shafts, lockright locker Rear axle- 31 spline 8.8, 4.10 gears, welded Suspension- Front is SOA with waggy springs, AAL, shackles, rear is SOA with AAL and shackles, skyjacker nitros all around 3 inch body lift 2 inch wheel spacers 4.0 OHV, automatic, bw1354 manual case Extended brakelines Steering- 94 explorer box, custom shaft, 1/4" steel plates on both sides of the frame, sleeved...
swapped in a tj dana 30 using rustys offroad 4.5" coils springs on ballistic fab adjustable coil buckets set 6" ahead of the normal coil bucket mounting location. links are 2x2x.25" square tubing with poly bushings from ruffstuff and trailgear creeper joints on the other end. custom fabbed link mounts just ahead of trans cmember and extensive driver side frame modification for upper link so I could get the suspension characteristics I wanted. netted about 3" of lift overall which required cutting the engine crossmember out of the way of the panhard bar which is made with ruffstuff heims and 1 3/4" dom with .25 wall thickness. truck flexes really well, future plans are for a wagoneer d44 to replace the d30, using the same suspension...
Just got the straight axe in this weekend. Pics coming soon but I'll give you the skinny on the swap. Pulled the ttb friday after work. Set up the axle welded front and rear mounts. and had weight on the axle saturaday. Sunday brakes and steering and tighten every thing. Along with first road test which resulted in sloppy steering which is fixed by a sleeve in the steering knuckle D30 ( out of Xj): $200 Grand wagoner steering: $25 Xj rear leafs: freebie fixed front mounts: $50 8" buggy spring to shackel rear mount: Freebie Soa: $20 rotors and brake pads: $45 wheel base extended 1" To 2" waiting on 6" Xj leafs which will sit about 4" Custom front shock towers It's not pretty but it's going to get the job done

ok,i just bought this, its technically a 92 frame, with a 97 body on it,i just trailered it home sunday. i havent had much time to go over it,but the few things i do know...it needs a better front axle. the entire drivetrains from a 67/68 bronco d30 front/9inch rear/302 and c4 trans with a dana20 i beleive tcase, its a cast iron case, very very closely resembles a NP205. it needs ALOT of work, but i got a pretty good deal on it,i paid 700 for it as you see in the pics. it also needs new springs all around, mainly, the front leaves are 6 inch {rear} ranger lift leafs.and they sagged quite a bit under the weight of the 302,and the rear is SOA conversion with i beleive 4 inch lift leafs, and 4 inch blocks,id prefer to just get taller...
