If you have a Ranger newer than 1988 with a manual transmission AND DO NOT HAVE A 2.9 ENGINE you have a MAZDA M5OD-R1.

If you have an 1988-1992 Ranger or Bronco II (1988-1990) with a manual transmission and 2.9 engine you can still have a Mazda transmission but a Mitsubishi is far more likely. The Mitsubishi has a bottom cover, a Mazda does not.

1983-1987 2wd Rangers and Aerostars (all engines) with Manual trans will be either a 4-speed or 5-speed "Toyo-Koygo" transmission. (Note: Aerostar 5sp only)

1983-1984 4x4 Rangers/Bronco II's (all engines) with Manual transmissions will be either a 4-speed or 5-speed "Toyo-Koygo" transmission.

1985-1987 4x4 (any engine) can be EITHER a Toyo-Koygo 5-speed (aka "T-K" or "Ranger-5") OR it can be a Mitsubishi FM145 5-speed manual (this transmission is 4x4 ONLY)

Toyo-Koygo's are more likely to be found in 4cyl 4x4 Rangers. Bronco II's are more likely
to be Mitsubishi FM145's

1988-1992 Rangers (4x4) / Bronco II (4x4 & 2wd) 2.9 engine can be;
1) Mitsubishi FM146 (2.9 4x4 ONLY)
2) Mazda M5OD-R1 (4x4 version)

1988-1992 Rangers 2wd equipped with the 2.9 engine there were both;
1) Mazda built M5OD-R1 (2wd Version)
2) Mitsubishi FM132 (2.9 2wd ONLY)

1988-current production Rangers with 4cyl engines both 2wd and 4x4 (including the 2.0 (carb), 2.3, 2.5 and (new) 2.3 DOHC will be a Mazda M5OD-R1. This is the only manual transmission factory installed behind four cylinder engines in Rangers after the beginning of the 1988 model year.

1988-1995 Aerostars with manual transmissions will have Mazda M5OD-R1 transmissions.

1991-current Rangers with the 3.0 engine:
The Mazda M5OD-R1 is the only manual transmission used in Rangers with this engine.

1991-2000 Ranger/Explorer with the 4.0OHV engine:
The Mazda M5OD-R1 is the only manual transmission used in Ranger/Explorer with this engine.

2001-on Ranger (1997-on in Explorers with the 4.0 SOHC engine):
the Mazda M5OD-R1HD is the only manual trans used in Rangers/Explorer with this engine.

NOTE: on Bronco II's ALL versions are equipped with 4x4 type transmissions,
because the 2wd Bronco II's use a "dummy" transfer case. I don't know why Ford did it this way, but that's the way they did it.

Bronco II's

A common thing to do to a 2wd Bronco II when the original transmission fails is to eliminate the dummy T-case and swap in a 2wd Ranger transmission.

2wd Ranger transmissions are FAR more common and proportionally less expensive than 4x4 transmissions.

Also swapping to a 2wd Ranger transmission allows the use of a longer driveshaft with conventional U-joints.

after checking my door on my 95 ranger, it says i have a M trans and a 87 axle...so according to this list my trans is not shown and i take it i have 4.10 gears front and rear...the reason i ask this is my right front arm sticker says 4.10 for the front axle and the door axle is only for the rear...correct? i know i have a bw transfer case but i can't decifer which one...hmmm

tbars this is all for the 4.0 your 2.3 will have a different trans.. you still should have the 1354 (manual or auto case)

5R55E.................. 1997-2000......... D.......... 2.47....... 1.87.......... 1.47.......... 1.0.......... 0.75.... Overall length is 29.25
M5OD R1.............. 1992-1996......... D.......... 3.72........ 2.25......... 1.5............ 1.0.......... 0.79.... Overall length is 29.25

got both it the driveway confirmed length by another member.

are your sure thats the right gearing for the M5ODR1 cause my rpms are lower in 5th now with it verus the 5r55e

truly i need to review and look into this further...i was led to believe i had 3.73's and the arm on my truck with the sticker has been replaced by who know's and it looks like it has junkyard yellow marker on it, but that sticker reads 4.10 on the front axle....now i also run 31's so that may be the rpm difference?...i was actually planning on putting 4.10's in the rear after i verify the front...well it looks like i will have to get old school and verify my truck myself...all i know is the 2.3 is what the sticker shows for the truck and i know i have... and as for the front axle from all the info i have found i have the hybrid dana 35....any help would be appreciated and i take it you got my rpm's from one of my other post?

i confirmed i have the 1354 but cannot find the tranny tag...need help to identify that...thanks.

after searching thru the database here i came up with this link and according to the info and pics, i have the m50d-r1...
http://therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.html ...now if i could easily verify my gears i'm set....and i'm still wondering if the rpm difference between mine and yours could be that i run 31's with 4.10's as apposed to your 33's with 4.56's...the reason i am asking this is because i would like to put 33's on this truck and now that i beleive i have 4.10's that should lower my rpm's....correct? looking for some help....

Is this correct? It list two different codes with the same gear ratio.

D4..... L/S 8.8"..... 3200..... 3.73
D5..... L/S 8.8"..... 3200..... 3.73

I got this info from TRS and other RBV owners

Yes it is, you have the M50d R2

Yes, you are correct.

tbars, this link might help you ID your trans. Dead Link Removed

rangerX, thanks...that link had more detail of optional trannies...M5R1 is what i came up with...so i'm thinking it's still an m50d-r1 or m5r1...correct?
kaymadan, i still see it being the above mentioned...the 4.10's i am now believing to be true...i am still hoping to run 33's on her and i still say, for 2300.00, i got my moneys worth... ;P

I have not physically checked this..... Here is where I got that info

http://therangerstation.com/tech_library/TransferCases.html

I would like to know which it is... If anyone has a t-case out of the vehicle give it a spin and see if the output turns more or less than 2.5 turns in low range.

When I bought my '93 new Im pretty sure one of the things I liked about it was the relatively deep low range.

Searching around on the net, I have seen both numbers attributed to the 1350/1354 t-cases.:dunno:

Can you send me the site where it says that the ratio is 2.72:1? I'll see if I can find out the correct ratio.

thanks to whoever posted this, its been hard to find the right axle code for my 99 xlt

Yes it is, you have the M50d R2

Yes, you are correct.

I thought OHV manuals had the M5OD R1, SOHC manuals were the M5OD HD, whereas the M5OD R2 is for the full size F-150....

zhanx....i have verified my tranny and my gears...my truck i find out is i guess what they call the high rider off road truck from ford...thats the reason i have the stock 2" over front coil springs and the 2 1/2" lift in the rear...i was told by ford that with this package and the 2.3L and 5 speed, they put in the 4.10's in this truck...now i'm hoping i don't have to worry about the drive shaft and yoke lengths since i just lifted it another 2 inches since it sagged from original height...
