M90 rebuild (rudy)

well figured i would start a new thread.just a quick background.did the whole build on my explorer but built it using stock head gaskets and head bolts.did it really as a safety net and i just couldnt afford head studs at the time.well to say the least i blew the head gaskets off from it wile i was in the mountains on a forum trip about two years later.

i picked up a 1994 ranger, its got the 4.0 OHV and is a 5 speed 2wd.the plan is to pull the motor out of the explorer and rebuild it.

this thread will basically cover the rebuild and build up of the new ranger.it will basically end up as a street race truck.ive named it Rudy:D:D so let the fun begin.

So got the spacers and going to try them tomorrow. .hopefully they fit and i can tq the heads and check the measurement of the push rods..

Also got the intercooler plates milled and they are at the machine shop to have the spacer waterjetted out..the new cooler is double thick at 1.50" and uses 1/2"npt fittings with 3/4" lines..it has many other features that make it far superior to the old one..the zzp cooler was .75" and used 3/8" lines..

I need to wrap the headers and get the alternator and power steering brackets mounted and measure for the 8 rib belt..then i plan to drop the motor and trans in,all goes as planned should be in but not running by Sunday .

The intercooler spacer will be done wed so hopefully get the supercharger on and everything buttoned up next weekend..

I have a dyno tune adjust appointment on September 22 at 2:30 ,should give me time to break the motor in and work out any bugs..

I just got my elite back so get ready for picture overload

Sorry for the random order,i tried to upload in some order but obviously it didnt work..lol

Gorgeous Pictures!
You made my night, I am going to dream about racing tonight. lol
That intercooler looks like it will work way better by the size increase.
Good luck on the rest of the build!!!!!

Lol thanks.

Yes its going to flow twice as good, the old 3/8" lines were really restricting my pump..everyone keeps saying im wasting my time considering im running ethanol and my temps wernt to crazy..But adding 8 more pounds of boost and spinning that m90 to max is going to create alot of heat and i dont care if the motor can handle it..the cooler the air the better!!

Your not far away from me,some day we may meet on the track..lol

Out of curiosity, what intercooler pump are you running?
Those head gaskets look cool!
Are you feeling better about the rocker assembly now? It looks good.

Still runnimg the bosch pump.
I just hope they hold in the compression and dont leak..lol

Honestly not much..the pushrod guide on the end of each assembly is slightly off causing the roller tip not to stay centered on the valve tip.i may pull the plates off and weld one side of the guide and mill it so the pushrod holds the roller centered..its not far off so haven't decided if i want to be that ****..

.also manley sent me lash caps for the top of the valve tips as when the cut the valves down outa the cores they hade, they cut below the hardening of the tip,so technically mine dont have hardened tips which is why they suggested valve tip lash caps..this adds height to the valve tip which may effect pushrod length. .at the time i wasnt going to run roller rockers, ive called them back and they said i dont honestly need the caps with roller rockers but i feel much better running them, they also give a little more surface area for the roller to ride on..

I do feel better about the spacers i had made and the bolt changes made.he also stoppeded water jetting his name and "4.0" into the plates..ill post pictures of the caps, spacers and the rollers that arn't centered tomorrow before i check pushrod length. .

so the cooler sandwiches between the two plates? or is there something else that goes in there. i always thought you had to have it sealed inside the intake or it would leak boost

Yes it sandwiches between the two or it did,im cutting a "spacer" to take up the gap it has now..basically cutting another hollow plate, all 3 will sandwich together and be sealed

Here are the two rollers that are not centered, they are not far off but im just being picky

And here is the lash caps and the difference if i was not to use them..

And the new spacers fit perfectly now, here is the difference in them..

The rocker roller tip pulls inward as it pushes the valve down. The arc.
are the rollers centered looking 90 degrees from the above pics? ( sideways)

Nope, those two are not centered no matter how you look at them

Well got a slight problem ..the locks are different from intake to exhaust, one uses a single groove and one uses a tripple groove..its like this on all 4.0,the valve is same length and install is all the same..just one lock is thicker..

Well the caps depth is .090 which it fits fine on the exhaust valve tip but the intake it doesnt fit flush ontop the valve tip,it hits the lock..so when the valve goes to open it pushes down on the locks, not the valve tip..so lash caps are out...

It appears pushrods are within spec..

Well got the motor completely buttoned up and headers done..I did not get to put it in this weekend, everything seemed to take twice as long to do and i got called into work today..

Also got the 8rib conversion done, really would like to find a wider pulley for the tensioner but it should work fine for now, spaced it out some so..

Guess till next week...

IC spacer is done, just need to mill the holes for the water lines/fittings..going to loose 2 bolt holes but not aure if bolts even go through them and how important they are if i dont have them..guess ill find out..lol

Here it is..need to figure out which holes i use and drill them but its done as far as milling goes..after i get the holes drilled ill pull it apart and seal it all up before it gets mounted..

Its gonna rain Saturday but its a 3 day weekend and the motor and trans should be in this weekend. .possibly even mount the SC back on.. :)

Motor is in..got the wrong pilot bearing for the flywheel,i ordered the right year (06 Mustang) but this definitely is the wrong bearing..so couldnt put the flywheel on or trans in because of it..hopefully somewhere local and open on sunday has it..
