Terrain Management / AdvanceTrac System Errors

I wonder why the throttle body would cause these faults.

Hi Everybody,

My '17 Ex Sport has the TMS fault also. Unfortunately, when this occurs a whole host of other things go bad as well. (911 system not operational, Check Parking Aid, the seat memory doesn't work, and my turn signals fail to operate.

I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow but have little hope after reading this thread. This will be my second visit and I have approximately 700 miles on the car. First time they told me they didn't find anything wrong. And to bring it back if it happened again. That was 10 days ago.

I will post any updates as I get them. Hoping for the best.

Thanks Peterk9,

Well, I'd like to report that after 4 days at the dealer, and upon turning the vehicle on, the techs also got the dreaded TMS error.
After what they told me was a lot of back and forth with specialist/engineers at FoMoCo, they decided it to be attributable to a Smart Data Link Module.
Since picking it up, I've only driven it a short distance and no light has appeared. Time will tell.
This was confusing because I haven't read this as being the culprit before in any thread. But again, time will tell if it's right or not.
I will definitely keep you up to date should issues arise or not.
Thanks to all for the info on this tread.

Do you happen to know the part number of the piece that they replaced? I have a similar intermittent fault and dealers have had no luck in tracking it down.

Thanks.

Does the 2012 Explorer have a smart data link module also?

Hey guys picked my 2014 Ford Explorer up from dealership where it had pretty much a rear end overhaul. The battery was dead when i picjed it up and their tester read bad battery. After jumping it off while i was driving home the Terrain Management Fault came up and my selector knob quit working. Could this be due to a faulty battery or something they did?

Low voltage can cause all sorts of erroneous codes in the system. If it persists after your next drive, I would investigate the issue further.

When my battery was having issues I had a good 24-30 codes in the system of various modules faulting out.

Welcome to the Forum Ronnie.
The first thing to do is to ensure you have a good battery before doing anything else. That would then take that as a cause out of the equation.
Also, please complete your registration by adding the 'Required' "Trim Level" (Base, XLT, etc.) to your profile so it appears in the margin. That can be useful info to have at times. Thank you.

Had the same problem in heavy snow day

Couldn't find the issue I will take it to the dealer

I have a 2016 explorer XLT AWD

it was heavily snowing today I went for 1 one hour ride then stopped at the pharmacy. I park over around a 20 cm snow in the street.

When I pressed on the pedal to accelerate suddenly the message (hill assist not available-terrain management system fault + service advanceTrac) appeared and I lost traction

I called the dealer they told me be to call back Monday to take an appointment!

Any solution ?

Did you try putting it (TMS) in 'Snow' mode? I wonder if something may have frozen.

Mine did something similar last month during heavy snow fall and blowing snow conditions was when it started. ABS light/TMS fault/advancetrac/hill ascent/hill descent/etc message upon start up and does not go away. Local(private) shop mech just came in the other day and dropped it off to him on the way to work this am. Just dropped the vehicle back as was typing this. Says it was the rear right abs wheel sensor and not picking up anymore due to corrosion or like sand papered off. Hmmm, got vehicle in August and already bad. He says he looked at the left rear and was same condition, figures it is going to go soon also. He will call dealer I purchased from and suggest to them they replace both but they may only do the faulty one and wait for other to go. He had a look at the fronts and they are fine yet. Most likely due to our roads are all gravel roads in the arctic and the rears see most of the dust.

Thank god when shopping for new vehicle I made a point of asking first how would they go about honoring warranty work since no dealers in my community. Ford was the only one that would honor that a local shop do the warranty work if needed(reason also why I bought my '08 F150 but luckily never had to use it on that one). Now wishing I got the ESP as at time of purchase didn't realize exp only had 3 yr, assumed it had 5 yr like my f150.

Had no issues driving as is since it started. Only downside was didn't have stability control, ABS feature(breaks would fully lock when applied hard) or no TMS. Other then not having those features vehicle drives normal with just the annoying warnings on display. Now to wait til parts come in and he can change them out hopefully both sides instead of waiting for the other side to fail. From his words he figures by the looks of it the other will maybe only last a couple more weeks. Oh, and once in a while it would say 4wd not available, but a vehicle restart would get the 4wd back but not all the other features.

^^ You can still purchase the ESP as long as factory warranty is still in effect. The start of the ESP will begin with the Explorer's 'In Service Date' and not the date you buy it now.

Peter

Explorer has 3/36 bumper to bumper, but 5/60 on powertrain.

You can get ESP before the 3/36 but read the contract carefully, I thought my contract specified that I have to have a local Ford dealer do the work instead of my independent. It might have an exclusion for you given your locality, but I don't remember such a thing.

Thanks guys, will look into ESP. Yeah I think they do something diff here in Canada due all the remote locations for service/warranty.

EDIT- and thanks Ford for that, the only reason I have bought ford past 2 vehicles and if the other manu's don't change, then will be a repeat customer for life.
