I just bought an 02 ford explorer with the 4.0
The transmission is bad in it. I have an 05 with the 4.6 in it. The transmission is good in the 4.6.
Can I change out the one out of the 06 and put it in the 02?

@Rudy Stork
Determine whether the transmission in the 02 is a 5R55S or 5R55W. The 05 will have 5R55S; they cannot interchange because they have different 2nd. gear ratios.

Otherwise, I'd say yes. imp

The bellhousing is cast into the transmission and the pattern is different between the two.

Ditto, the 4.0 was a narrow deck OHV block from 1990, and the 4.6 modular engines began in 1992 as a whole new block with different bell housing pattern. The 4.0 is a 70 degree block, and the 4.6 I think is the traditional 90* block angle.
