I am rebuilding an 85 Ranger 2wd. I did body work back in the 70's and I am finding out that nothing is the same! I Am looking forward to talking and learning from some of the best with Rangers.

Should swap, I don’t believe there is a carrier break, if that’s what you’re asking. But it would be easier to just swap the whole axle if it’s in good shape. Or swap in an 8.8 from a newer Ranger/ Explorer.

There is no carrier break. Thanks! Will let you know what happens.

yes you can swap 3.08 (never even heard of this ratio in a ranger!!?) for the 3.73 from a 86
I thought the lowest they went was 3.27, I thought the 2.73 and 3.08 were only for the cars?

I never heard of that ratio in a pick up either. I just know it is too fast. Hey thanks for the info. Have a good one.

Jamie, our old 92 Explorer Sport even had 3.08, not very ‘sporty’!
