97 explorer death rattle queston

wewll mine had it and jumped timing, i tore her down, and im wondering there are some shavings in the timing cover, does that go down into the oil pan?

if so does it pay to throw the tensioner in it?

Well if you pull the oil pan, you will probably find more that just shavings down there. Chances are good that you will find parts of the old tensioner in the oil pan. Looks like it's time to replace the tensioners in your engine.

The oil pump pick up screen and oil filter will catch the debris.
Put the tensioner in and set everthing back up, you should be fine.

You should pull the oil pan and clean it out.

The oil pump pickup screen will catch a lot of broken pieces of plastic but this can also restrict oil flow leading to bigger problems. My oil pickup was so restricted it was hard to believe the engine survived. It's not that hard to pull the pan and check to be on the safe side.
