Hi guys ... Need your help please.

My driveway has a little bit of an incline.
I'll back my 2000 XLT into the driveway ...
Put her in PARK ...
Then the vehicle will roll fwd making a ratcheting noise.

What can it be ?

Drive shaft, Tranny, Rear end ?????

Try putting it in low range and see if it still does it?

It's the parking pin.

Make sure you're at a full stop before you throw it in park. And I suggest yo start turning your wheels so if it does roll in the future it doesn't go into the street, maybe towards the grass, or a small snow bank. I do not suggest a tree.

Sounds like parking pawl noise or it is worn and allowing movement.

Parking Pawl ?

Can you tell me more about this

the parking pawl is the system that locks the output shaft in the tranny from being able to move.
The parking pin is the same system.
when the pin drops into the notches it holds the tranny.
This explains the system
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission11.htm
its designed to be able to slip if you were, for example, to put the vehicle in park while driving, it slips and ratchets over the notches.
when the pin gets worn down, it can slip even when a mild stress is put on it, like parking on a hill.

use your parking brake from now on and it should keep the vehicle from rolling.

easy , you were still moving when you put it in park,,

You guys are GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!! A real wealth of knowledge.

Hope the repair does not run into big bucks.
I would guess a tranny shop is the way to go rather than the dealer ?

Thank you for your expert advise.

Somebody here has usually had whatever it is to screw up before you have so whatever it is has usually been researched/repaired.

:( Did that make any sense?)

If you have a 4x2 it is really not very difficult to pull the driveshaft and unbolt the tail housing. If it's a 4x4 a lift and transmission jack would be really helpful so a transmission shop may be the ticket.
