Rusted broken off transmission shift lever screw/bolt? SEE PICS!

okay so lately when i shift into Drive, the car doesn't immediately go into gear, but i have to play with the shifter a bit to get it to go into drive.

we went underneath my car today and we found that what looks to be a broken bolt? a part of the screw is stuck attached to the bolt. see pics.

whats the name of this bolt?

how much will this cost to fix? :'(

its strange that only that one spot is rusted, but everywhere else on the car is fine.

That stud is for the transmission lever for the range sensor. Did you shear it trying to tighten it?

Should be replaceable by dropping the pan.

actually my dad went underneath the car, and he noticed the lever wasn't tight, so he tried tightening the bolt with his hand, and it wouldn't budge, so he tried unscrewing it and it fell off! hows that!

for sure it wasn't him that broke it, because the peice is completely rusted through!

we are wondering would it be okay to just weld the lever on?

okay at this point, it looks like we have to replace that peice of screw that is inside the transmission. my car only has 24k miles on it and it doesn't make sense to spend 700+ just to replace the snapped off screw.

we are currently trying to figure out a way to get the lever on the screw on for good. any ideas?

we can't weld it because theres a washer inside the transmission on the steel bolt and because of the thickness of the bolt, in order to weld it would require to heating the bolt really hot, melting the rubber

700 bucks, where did you get this estimate? Dealer, trans shop?

The following is specific to the 6R60, 6 speed trans.

I'm not a trans expert, but from what I see in my shop manual, looks like a couple hours of labour, fluid (6/7 qts), filter, new manual control lever shaft and seal for the shaft.

It appears from the shop manual that the seal is on the outside of the casing. From your pics, the seal is missing.

Procedure is to drain and remove pan, remove elec connection at rear of trans, remove connector sleeve from trans, remove 11 bolts from mechatronic assembly, remove parking rod actuating plate.

Now remove roll pin from manual control lever shaft, slide shaft out while holding spacer/sleeve from falling out of case, remove manual valve inner lever and park rod as an assembly.

Install is more or less reverse of above. As you can see, you really need a shop manual or relevent experience to do the above. Even filling the pan with fluid to proper level is somewhat difficult, but critical for proper opperation.

Whatever you do, have someone install a drain plug in the pan. Will make any future fluid changes easier.

we actually looked into trying to tap the screw and using a pin to hold it in place, but the drill we used is unable to even scratch the steel.


not sure if theres such of a drill + drill bit that can cut through thick still like this?
